On Sunday 8th May, 34 athletes travelled to Widnes for the Young
Athletes League! Overall the club came 2nd and 6 athletes at
Grade standards: Tricia, Matty, Taylor, Chloe, Rachael and Jessica.
Well Done! Northern Track and Field League -Match 1 Ellesmere Port In the sprints, Thaddeus Anim Somuah almost completed a double winning the 200m in 22.2s equalling his club record and narrowly missing out in the 100m where he finished 2nd recording the same time as the winner. Michael Causer was 3rd in the 200m B race after 2 impressive performances in the jumps. Michael finished 2nd in the A string Long Jump breaking the club U17 and Senior records with 6.55m and 2nd in the A high jump, only losing out on count back. Good points were scored in the middle distance events with John Ashcroft finishing 2nd in the 800m A Race and Jamie Webb finishing 2nd in the B race in his league debut. Jamie added valuable points in coming 4th in the 400m A race. In the 1500m, Matt Shirling had an impressive debut winning the A string in a P.B. of 4.04.3 and Ian Costello ran his best time for many years finishing 2nd in the B race. Steve Clague was our only runner in the 3,000m steeplechase finishing 4th in the A race despite suffering with a calf injury incurred during the 400m hurdles A race where he still finished 4th. Steve had a typically busy afternoon finishing 4th in the 400m B and 2nd in the B string Pole Vault before tackling a duo of relays. In the last individual track race of the day, Nathan Brown was 6th making his 5,000m debut in the A race and Maurice Collins finished 4th in the B race. Phil Robinson had a good day in the jumps following a good 2nd in the A string pole vault. Phil was 3rd in the B string high jump, 4th in the B string long jump and 5th in the A string triple jump before finishing the day with a fine 3rd place in the B string Javelin. We have a thriving throws section at the moment and this was demonstrated in the results where all of our athletes finished in the top 3 in the 8 individual events. Gary Ireland led the way finishing 3rd in the A Hammer, the A Discus, the A Javelin and the A Shot Putt. There were great wins in the B string Hammer (Mike Hughes) and the B string Shot Putt (Mike Jackson). Mike J was also 3rd in the B string Discus. We finished 4th in both relays despite some interesting baton exchanges! The 4 x 100m team of Thaddeus Anim Somuah, Michael Causer, Steve Clague and Jamie Webb recorded 48.6s and in the 4 x 400m, Thaddeus, Ian Costello, Steve Clague and Jamie Webb finished in 3.50.5m. Well done to all who competed and thanks to the timekeepers, judges and all those who turned up to support on the day. Full results can be found using the link below. Ian Hayburn

The first NJL match of the season took place in bright sunshine and a blustery wind at Witton Park, which is far easier to reach now the M65 has been built. With a team affected by the proximity of crucial exams (although some ladies took their study notes with them and taught some of us the syllabus for dance in case we decide to do it in the future) the club finished sixth, ahead of Wirral, with an improved points total over 2010. A number of athletes used the opportunity to try new events, Amy Hughes (400H), Jenny Lamb (400 and triple jump), Rachel Wilcock (400), Natalie Bannister set a personal best in the high hurdles, Lucy Croft recorded her best discus throw for two seasons while Patricia Spark continues to throw the hammer over 30m. For the first in a long time, the girls managed to field full relay teams in both the 4x100m and 4x400m races. James Webster won the 400m hurdles and James Sutton contested the 100m. In addition, Nathan Orr set a personal best in the javelin. Thanks to our full set of officials for scoring maximum points. Dave Morley - Track, Janet Holmes - Timekeeper, George Mullineux, John Irwin, Colin Spark and Anthony Lamb (Field). Thanks for the parental support from Mrs Wilcock and Sean Bannister and to those athletes who showed us that chips and and ice cream can be eaten together, even just before an event. Report from Dave Morley and Phil Thomas. Urgent information about closing date for Merseyside Track & Field Champs The closing date for the Merseyside Champs needs some clarification as there has been conflicting information depending on which website you have looked at. The closing date for postal entries is 3rd May. The level of entries will determine if that particular event will go ahead, some events may be cancelled and the decision will be taken on the evening of 3rd May. From 4th to 10th May you will be able to make on-line entries. However, this will only be for events that will definitely go ahead. If you are entering an event where there may be a low number of entries, it is suggested you meet the first deadline for entries so you are not disappointed.
