Park Run results: Jim Crehan finished 32nd in 26.11 at Pennington Flash on 22 October while a week later at Princes Park, Liverpool, Phil Robinson was 23rd in 21.19. All the races are run over 5k on a Saturday morning and provide excellent time-trials which serve as a guide to current levels of fitness. Snowdonia Marathon 29 October.
Greg Carns
ran the Snowdonia Marathon on Saturday 29th October. Conditions in
Llanberis were as forecast with strong winds and heavy rain. The
scenic course has plenty of variety to make it interesting throughout. Soon
after the start there is a 900ft climb up the Llanberis pass to
Pen-Y-Pass, followed by a long descent into Nantgwynant. There is
an easier climb out of Beddgelert at the half-way mark and at mile 22
you are confronted by an 800ft climb before a 900ft descent over the
last mile back into Llanberis. I finished in 3:46:34 in
295th place. I would recommend this race as an alternative to the big
city marathons. It's not pb material as with 3000ft of ascent it's reputed
to be one of the toughest road marathons in Europe, but the scenery is
superb and it never feels crowded with only around 1500 runners, giving it
a friendly atmosphere. I
can't imagine a better marathon as it's just such a good route. Next year's race is on Saturday 27th October -
entries open 1st January. Information from Greg
Carns. Well done, an excellent performance which has left
this reader exhausted and ready for a lie down. As a matter of interest this
marathon was the first road race Greg contested two years ago when he
started running to lose weight and raise money for Cancer research. He
hasn't stopped since.
L&D Round 1 : Beacon Park, Skelmesdale - Saturday 29 October The Senior men turned out eight runners for this classic local race, conditions were a little kinder than recent years but this course is always testing. Tony Smith had a fantastic run, leading the club home finishing 7th, 33:30. Ian Costello showed good strength finishing 32nd, 36:00 closely followed by Barry Graney (35th, 36:21). Rob Kennedy (44th, 36:44) made a welcome return to racing for the club with a solid performance and Ian Hayburn (58th, 38:16) continues to improve. Captain Peter Johnson came though in 83rd, 40:56 with Ray Vose (86th, 41:51) and Phil Robinson (100th, 43:02) completing the team. The counting six finished the team in 6th place with 259 points. Cross country runners now have the chance to try out a fell race next week (see Mark Liptrot) or take a weekend off before our home fixture (Manchester League round two at Sherdley). Ken Williams. Ken's funeral will take place at St Nicholas's Church, New Street, Sutton, on Friday 4 November at 11.30.a.m. Sportshall Round 1 : Kingsway, Widnes - 23 October On Sunday 23rd, 23 athletes (18 girls and 5 boys) attended our 1st Sportshall meeting of the season, with quite a few athletes competing in club colours for the 1st time. They all put in 110% effort and should be proud of their performances. Most importantly, they had a great time and supported each other well in every event. Huge thanks to all of the parents that supported the event and to Rachel Wilcock for helping to manage the team. .The results should be online later in the week, follow this link Results (Please note down your PB’s and aim to better them next time. Where you came in the results is not of primary importance at this stage of the season) Please Note: The next fixture is Sunday 20th November. We do need more boys (all ages), Under 13 girls and Under 15’s to stand any chance of qualifying for the finals. Presentation Evening This year's presentation evening will be taking place Friday 13th January 2012. As the annual trophies are presented on this night it is essential that they are returned by the end of the year. Please return any special trophies to Sue Clague or Chris Causer. As last year, we are hoping to arrange a slide show of photos of our athletes taken through the year. If you have any photos you'd like to share, and can put then on a CD, please bring these to the club house and pass to your coach or one of the committee.

Ken Williams 1947 - 2011 - RIP
The club regrets to announce the death of Ken Williams on 17 October. Ken had a heart attack at Wrexham from which he never regained consciousness. Despite receiving the best medical care his physical condition deteriorated and the decision was taken to remove the life support system which was all that was keeping him alive. He passed away soon after. Our thoughts are with his parents at this time. Funeral details will be notified as soon as they are known. In addition to his athletics Ken was a bandsman with the Army in Northern Ireland, an activity which he maintained in civilian life. He was an excellent technician in the discus both in his use of the feet and the delivery of the implement. He got on well with the other throwers, in particular with Mike Hughes who seemed to understand Ken's strengths and weaknesses. Ken Williams: Update 16 October Ken suffered two more heart attacks last week and remains very poorly. He is still receiving round the clock care but medical staff have indicated that there is nothing more they can do beyond continuing the treatment he is currently receiving. Everything depends on Ken's physical and emotional reserves but the prognosis remains troubling, especially for his family who appreciate club members' interest and thoughts at this difficult time. Indiana State Pre-National Invitational 8k Cross Country: Terra Haute David Forrester finished fifth in this race recording 24.09. Florida State were fourth equal team but were upstaged by their ladies contingent who won the women's team race. Sportshall Information

Liverpool Marathon, 9 October The return
of the Liverpool marathon tempted a few of the club's runners to take to the
roads, even despite having to cross the Mersey half way through the course.
The race started (45mins late) in Birkenhead park and included a long windy
stretch along the waterfront back to the Birkenhead tunnel. The race then
turned through the city centre and climbed up to Sefton park which was a great
place to view the race as the runners looped in and out of the park
several times. Conor Murphy ( 03:07:29, 36th M) was first back for
the club, with Chris Burrows ( 03:18:43, 86th M) narrowly beating debutant Greg Williams (03:19:04, 90th M)
, all three were followed by Peter Johnson (1:34:51 half marathon) up
until at least half way. Anthony Mousdale (03:20:11, 6th V50) had a
great race on this tough course to finish well inside the top ten in his age
group. Julia Eccleston ( 03:56:43, 24th V35) was our first lady home with
a very even paced run, dropping only 8 minutes on the hilly second half.
Rosie O'Hagan ( 04:13:15, 6th V50) ran well for a good placing in her age
group and was followed in by Sharon Nunn (04:18:58, 38th V40) completing
the trio of ladies.
Results Parkrun - Princes Park, Liverpool 8 October Ian Costello finished second in this 5k event in a time of 17.55. Information on the race results came in two separate emails, one written in English and the other written in Polish! So don't forget to say "Czesc" (pronounced "Chesht.") to Ian next time you say "Hello". Ken Williams Update: Ken remains seriously ill in Walton. He appears to have a pulmonary oedema (fluid on the lungs) so he has had a tracheotomy to assist his breathing. As expected, there has been damage to Ken's heart and he remains under constant care and observation. Ken's parents have again expressed their gratitude for all the messages of support they have received. Ascis Natterjack 10k - Southport 2 October Maurice Collins was first home for the club as second O45 recording 38.51. Results Sandstone Trail Race, Beeston Sun 2 October Mark Liptrot ran the classic Sandstone Trail race. This is 17 miles through a wide variety of terrain: flat, undulating, hilly, exposed hillside, woodland, farmland and tarmac. A very enjoyable race, with the dry weather making for firm underfoot conditions. Mark came in 14th, just beating the V50 trophy winner - a pity his birthday is next week! News From America. On Friday, David Forrester finished eighteenth in the Notre Dame 5mile cross country invitational meeting at Notre Dame, Indiana, recording 24.33. Northern Cross Country Relays: Sheffield 1 October. On Saturday, 13 young
athletes travelled to Sheffield for the Northern Cross Country Relays. The
weather was very hot for cross country running but all of them did the club
proud by running very well. |
