Liverpool Half Marathon - 27 March

On a perfect day for running, eight of the club's athletes took part in this well organised race.  This year saw the biggest turn out yet with a full house of 7500 runners. The runners took the usual course through three of the city's parks and even had a slight tail wind for the last three miles down the prom (although it probably didn't feel like it by that stage!).  First back for the club was Alan Mcnally ( 1:25:44, 173)  keeping his London marathon plans on track. Next home Anthony Mousdale ( 1:30:12, 366) followed by  Dave Hampson ( 1:33:15, 539) with  Antony Young ( 1:44:36, 1766) completing the men's turnout.

Four of the club's ladies took part with Julie Pennington (1:42:02, 1426) coming home first recording another pb.  Next in was Cherryl Orrick ( 1:52:01, 2772) followed by Lynsey Wilson ( 2:03:57 , 4289)  and  Katie Shields ( 3:00:31, 6195).

Memberships

As the club is expecting to welcome more new members following last weekend's 10k we're taking the opportunity to reorganise the nightly subscription collection.  From the second of April the subs desk will now have a register of members and tick off those attending.  This should simplify the running of the nightly subs desk and help ensure we're providing the right athletes/coach group sizes.

Non members can attend the club at the normal training rate £1 (£2 families) for two weeks while they settle in and see how friendly the club is.  After this they can join or continue to attend at a visitors rate of £2 (£4 families).  There is no pressure to join, however memberships have the advantage of being cheaper and allowing reduced cost entry to many races (EA number).  It should also be noted that by not being a member of the club the athlete is not covered by the sports blanket insurance cover and trains at their own risk.

Anyone who has not yet paid this years membership, which was due on the 1st Jan, should do so at their earliest opportunity.

Wuthering Hike, Haworth - 12 March

Mark Liptrot showed those feeling sorry for themselves while training for marathons what a long run is really like.  He took part in the 32 mile Wuthering Hike fell race on Saturday 12th March. The course starts in Howarth (home of the Brontes) and traverses the moors and valleys around Hebden Bridge with 4,400 feet of ascent.  He came in a creditable 30th in a time of 4:55:50. Results

Of fell running Mark says, "I heartily recommend fell running as a great family day out - they often start and finish in lovely places, and there are often junior events. Visit the Fell Runners Association website for a comprehensive list of races.  For runners, they are great for building strength and endurance without risking the type of injuries you might get by pounding the roads for long distances."

Calling all Tesco shoppers - Sports Vouchers

Tesco are running their annual campaign to help clubs and schools collect vouchers to exchange for various items of equipment. Vouchers are available from 28th February to 8th May 2011 and are awarded for every £5 spent on either groceries or petrol.

Why not start saving your vouchers and bring along to the Club? We will have a collection box available but you can also hand them in at the desk when you pay your fees.

This is a new venture for us and we hope to be able to order some sports equipment. A lot of schools are registered with Tesco for this campaign, please consider giving your vouchers to the Club who have a much smaller number of members to donate.

Many thanks – Chris Dempsey (Secretary)

 County Honours

Eight St Helens athletes have earned the honour of wearing the county vest in Saturday's inter counties cross country championship, in Birmingham.   The athletes have performed consistently well over the last six months of the cross country season and have earned their places in the team.  This year the club is well represented by the younger age groups, a sign which bodes well for the future of the club and reflects the effort put in by both the athletes and their coaches. Gemma Connelly will run for Cheshire.  Danielle Webb, Rosie Johnson, Adam Woosey, Matty Shirling, Jamie Webb, Jamie White & John Ashcroft will run for Merseyside

Wine Tasting

A date has now been arranged and tickets will go on sale at the Subs Desk within the next couple of weeks priced £8.50.

Friday 29th April, 8pm at St Barts Church Hall in Rainhill. Tickets are strictly limited on a first come, first served basis to over 18’s only.

This is a fun event with participants tasting 6 different wines and trying to match them to the tasting notes provided. There will be plenty of wine and I’m sure you’ll agree that it was great value for money afterwards. For the hard core amongst you, I suspect we’ll decamp to The Ship afterwards for last orders!

Please invite your friends and family and make this a regular event in the social calendar. For more info: call Ant Young on 07767 310204

3 Peaks Challenge

We have enough interest to try and arrange the 3 peaks challenge for June. For those of you not familiar with the concept. The idea is to climb Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon (the 3 biggest mountains in the UK) in 24 Hours. It is likely that we will arrange a weekend in June for the attempt.

There is a meeting on Thursday 17th March, 8pm at The Bull & Dog for potential participants to find out more, agree a date and understand what kit and training are needed.

We will also be looking for a couple of drivers to accompany the team so please don’t be shy, you’ll have a great time and be an integral part of the attempt.

I have done this challenge 4 times and can assure you that this is a very achievable task for anyone that is semi-fit, you don’t need to be super human, but you do need the right attitude and equipment.

If you want to know more, please come to the meeting, if you don’t then we may have to go without you as we need to sort out the transport logistics for those serious about taking part. For more info: call Ant Young on 07767 310204
