Cheshire League 3rd Round, Bury 31 August On Sunday 31st July, 21 athletes travelled to Bury for
the 3rd round of the Cheshire League. On a very warm and humid day, we had a 6
year club record broken by Adam Woosey in the Under 13 Boys 800m
race, setting the record at 2:23:4. Northern Inter-Counties - Leigh 30 August A number of club athletes represented Merseyside at the above event. Unfortunately, results for the match are incomplete and, in some instances inaccurate, but it is known that Rachael Woosey, Bethany Baxter, Chloe Rigby and Patricia Spark all took part. Colin Spark acted as team manager for the Boys' team. Major New Sponsor signs up to the Trail! We are pleased to announce the signing of St Helens Windows as the major sponsor for the Dream Trail Race. We’d like to thank Gary Burgess and the team at St Helens Windows for their support and look forward to making the event a huge success. On hearing the news, Steve Prescott from The Steve Prescott Foundation said ““It is fantastic that organisations like the St Helens Sutton Athletic Club and St Helens Windows can put on events like the St Helens Windows Dream Trail Race. The SPF are keen on promoting health and well being within the St Helens Community and this fits the criteria. The Dream Statue is an inspiring sculpture, I hope it will inspire many juniors and seniors to take part. The course will be extremely challenging but will offer a great sense of achievement to all participators!” The announcement was made in this week’s St Helens Star and marks the start of an intensive campaign to sign up competitors for the race. If you haven’t already entered, get your entry in soon as places are strictly limited. Visit our Dream Trail Web page from the link on the left or click here. International Snowdon Race, Saturday 23 July
After a 12 week lay-off with a back injury Greg Carns contested the International Snowdon Race (Ras Yr Wyddfa) on Saturday 23 June. It's a 10 mile race, starting in Llanberis and ascends the Llanberis path to Snowdon summit, returning via the same route. Greg reached the summit in 1:04:41 and descended in 33:56 for a total time of 1.38.37, three minutes faster than last year and despite cramping up in the last half mile. Here's some great photos from the race and, yes, the eagle-eyed amongst you will have recognised Ray Vose's vest!!! Greg's buying his own this week.
John Ashcroft (3), Matthew Shirling (7), Jamie White (13) and Nathan Brown (15) finished as first team at the Burtonwood Five. The second team of Mark Davies(22), Mark Liptrot (37) Chris Levy (40) and John Appleton (42) were fourth overall and the first B team to finish. Important Notice : Northern Track and Field League. The final match in the Northern Track and Field League will take place at Trafford on Sunday 14 August, not as shown on the fixtures page. Please make sure you are available on 14 August. Trafford Grand Prix 12 July Matthew Shirling set an U17 club record at Trafford, recording 3.53.06. Matthew was one of eight club members taking part. Results: Sankey Valley Dash 8 July The Sankey Valley Dash 4KM, organised by Andrew O'Connor, took place on Friday 8th July at Havannah Lane, St.Helens. We had a virtual clean sweep of winners :-. Rob Marsh 1st, John Appleton 3rd, Denis Wharton 4th and 1st MV55. John Irwin 1st MV65 and Helena McGoldrick 1st lady. Thanks to Pam Appleton, Janet Holmes and Pauline Picton for doing the timekeeping. Hope to see more from the Club when the race returns next year. Forest Park 5k at Birchwood 6 July Five of our ladies ran in the popular ladies-only race held on an accurately measured traffic-free course. The course is fairly flat, with just two small hills and run on good paths through parkland. First in for the club was Julia Eccleston (23rd, 21:55), next Cherryl Orrick (42nd, 23:32), followed by Joanne Keogh (60th, 25:46). Jane Ashcroft (73, 27:10) backed up by Lyn White (76, 27:22) completed the team who finished tenth overall. Mystery 5k at Wavertree 5 July
On a warm and slightly breezy evening the club turned out a talented vet quartet at this popular 5k race held on a traffic free tarmac paths course inside Wavertree mystery park, Rob Marsh arrived late and just missed the start of the race meaning that he gave the whole field a three and a half minute head start, (you're good Rob but not that good!!) his official time was given as 22.20 (85th) he actually ran 18.59 which would have placed him in 25th.
Mark Liptrot recorded 19.45 (35th) although disappointed as he
was looking to go nearer the 19 minute mark, Dennis Wharton on limited
training due to a knee problem recorded 20.15 (50th) and Stan Erlam
ran 23.30 (105th) 33 seconds quicker than last time out, he would
have been quicker but for chatting to his competitors half way around the
course!!
The next Wavertree 5k is the fourth out of a series of five and is on Tues
9th of August 7.15 start, enter on the night.
Northern League 2W at Stretford 3 July The club finished fourth in the penultimate round of the 2011 Northern Track and Field competition in warm conditions at Stretford. The team positions mirrored the overall state of the competition with the points on the day translated into the same divisional places. Scores: Match points followed by League points (1) West Cheshire 418 (18); 2 LPS 375 (14); Trafford A C 370 (11); St Helens-Sutton 336 (10); SouthportWaterloo A C 240 (7) and Altrincham 204 (3). If we stay ahead of SWAC and Altrincham we should keep our place in division 2W where it is likely we shall be joined by Wirral A C & Liverpool B. Thus it is important during the winter to look at and rectify those areas where we are weak. Sue Clague and Peter Johnson/Ian Hayburn will be producing reports soon but there were a number of debutants (including Karen Marsh and Julie Pennington), another appearance by the ever-young Kenny Williams, a 1500m personal best for Nathan Brown, a long jump victory for Michael Causer and the usual multi-event contributions from Phil Robinson and Steve Clague. Our officials on the day were Dave Morley (track), Pam Appleton and Janet Holmes (timekeepers) with Roger McCall leading the field team of George Mullineux, Nathan Orr, Colin Spark and John Irwin.
