Sportshall Results - Crewe

Unfortunately we didn't make the final.  However, the eleven athletes that we took to Crewe shared twenty two new Personal Bests between them with each athlete registering at least one. Well done to everybody.

A lack of athletes played its part in the early rounds and we left ourselves too much to do in the last two legs. Lesson learnt for next year - we need more team members please!!!

Presentation Evening

This year's presentation evening will be taking place this Friday 21st January.  As the annual trophies are presented on this night it is essential that they are returned preferably by this Tuesday.  Please return any special trophies to Sue Clague or Lynn Webb.

As last year, we are hoping to arrange a slide show of photos of our athletes taken through the year.  If you have any photos you'd like to share, and can put then on a CD, please bring these to the club house and pass to your coach or one of the committee.

The Handicap is a fun run open to all members, friends and family and everyone has a chance to win as your starting position is determined by the coaches!

Camera found - Stadt Moers

Please see message from Ron Scott below.

One of my athletes found a camera in the car park at Stadt Moers today.  I don't know if it is an expensive camera or not but I'm told it has photos from Delhi on it so someone may be missing it.

If anyone hears of the loss please let me know and we'll try to re-unite them.
Thanks, Ron Scott.

SportsHall, Shavington Leisure Centre, Crewe - Sunday 16th January 2010

The next fixture is at Shavington Leisure Centre, Rope Lane, Shavington, Crewe, Cheshire, CW2 5DJ.

Meet at 11.30am but please be aware that this is a small venue so seats will be at a premium!

We are trying to arrange some club T Shirts for Sunday so it would be great if athletes could wear Black, Red or White Shorts & Socks. The kit may not arrive in time so please can you also bring a T-Shirt or if possible Club Vest.

Athletes should also have food and most importantly drinks to last throughout the day. We expect the competition to last until 4pm when we travel back to St Helens. Apparently, the organisers are trying to group the events so that the day runs quicker and more efficiently.

If you require assistance with travel or need any further advice, please contact one of the coaching team for the day.

Mark Barrow: 30/6/68 - 9/1/11

We regret to report the death at Whiston Hospital on 9 January of Mark Barrow. Mark was taken into Whiston last Wednesday where he was diagnosed with a serious progressive illness. He passed away in the early hours of Sunday morning. Mark was originally with Pilkingtons before moving to LPS where he enjoyed much success. He came to St Helens-Sutton when his first child expressed an interest in the sport and has been with the club for the past two years. Mark was one of nature's true gentlemen, one of those rare people of whom never a bad word was said or heard. His disarming smile radiated calm wherever he went and it is a pleasure to have known him. Our thoughts are with his wife Debbie, his children and the rest of the Barrow family.

Mark's funeral will take place at St Anns Church, Rainhill on Friday 14 January at 11.am. Following this there will be a private service at Widnes Crematorium for family and very close friends. After both services have been completed everyone is invited to Rainhill Ex-Servicemen's Club.

Merseyside Cross Country Championships 8 Jan, Stadt Moers, Whiston.

Juniors : Some outstanding results from the juniors at the Merseyside Cross Country Champs with County vests up for grabs very soon.

U13 girls came third team with Rosie 3rd, Danielle 6th, Lucy 17th, Shannon 23rd and Lauren 24th
U13 boys saw Adam Woosey have an excellent run finishing 5th in a very strong field
Vicky Lamb was our only U15 girl finishing in 23rd place and in the U15 boys Matty Shirling had a very strong run to win his age group by over a minute.
U17 men saw Jamie White 4th and Jamie Webb 6th but he may be promoted to 5th after it was revealed that two Wirral lads appeared to have cut the course short.

Well done to all who turned up and lets try to achieve full teams in the future. All athletes look forward to the Northern Championships in Sunderland in a few weeks.

Senior Men : Stadt Moers is a tough, true cross country course and the wet conditions made for hard work.  The Senior men were helped by the return of Tony Smith who lead the team home and sealed second  V40 spots.  Barry Graney had a steady run with a good finish to move inside the top 40.  Another close run between the next three saw Ian Hayburn use his speed to eclipse Rob Kennedy in the finish straight, with Ray Vose not far behind.  Good support round the course including Ian White, a frustrated supporter this time still trying to return from injury.

U20 Men : John Ashcroft led the Sutton runners home securing a good second place followed by Jake Healey and, for two laps at least, Steve Clague who unfortunately pulled up with injury.

Senior Women : Julia Eccleston led the women home coming in thirdn her age category. Winning support was from Chris Dempsey, followed by Sharon Nunn both winning their age categories.

First to race were the Under 11 Girls. Caitlin came 31st in a time of 11:44.  This was a very strong run from Caitlin, Well Done!

First from the boys was: Joe who came 12th in a time of 11:31. Then David followed in 27th in a time of 13:49. Well Done Boys!

Nathan was 11th and finished in a time of 26:20.

Well Done it was a hard race to start off the New Year!   The next League Meeting is 12th February at Clayton Vale.

Seniors

A great turn out of 10 Senior and 2 Junior Men kick started their New Year campaigns with a fast, surprisingly dry race, at Stockport.  After the fast flat start and race downhill, the back fields provided an unexpected challenge with tricky terrain and a long slow climb back to the foot of "that" hill. First home was John Ashcroft (15, 35:53) finishing 2nd U20 in the Junior race. First Senior was Barry Graney (56, 39:43) followed by Maurice Collins (75, 40:50) both 12th in their respective vet categories. A great performance (that's what training does for you) from Steve Clague (87, 41:17) to clinch 6th U20 and just hold off Rob Marsh (90, 41:22). Good team support and racing in the next group that saw five runners finish within twenty seconds led in by Alan McNally (108, 42:32) and closely followed by  Rob Kennedy (114, 42:47), Mark Davies (118, 42:53), Ian Hayburn (119, 42:55) and Ray Vose (120, 42:57). Mark Barrow (162, 46:09) and Peter Johnson (185, 48:56) completed the squad.

Three senior ladies tackled the hilly course at Woodbank Park Stockport.  Gemma Connolly finished 6th overall in a time of 26.58 and is lying in second place in the aggregate competition with one match remaining.  Julia Eccleston was the next lady to finish in 52nd place (32.17 and 10th L35) with Chris Dempsey completing the trio in a time of 37.23 (100th place and 9th L50).  Well done to the ladies who competed so close to the New Year, let's get ready now for the last match at the new venue of Clayton Vale.
