London Marathon Places

Those members who entered the London Marathon will hopefully be receiving their acceptance magazines shortly.  If you are unlucky enough to receive a rejection, you can apply to enter the ballot for one of the club places. For the first call, as well as having a rejection from the ballot, applicants must currently be members of the club and have been so for one year.  Please let your captain or the secretary know as soon as possible (with proof of rejection) if you want to apply.  As usual if there are any places not filled from this first call a further ballot of members wishing to be considered will be held, again let the secretary/captains know if you wish to be considered in any second ballot.  In order to maximise training time the entries to the ballots will close at the end of next month.

Presentation & Social Evening

The club's annual presentation evening is now provisionally booked for Friday, 29th October, at Rainhill Club and Sports Bar,

Tickets available from 30th at a price of £4.  All proceeds will go directly to club funds.
Please come along to congratulate our athletes, support your club and have a good time..

Blackpool Open Meeting 26 September

James Owen broke Jon Calder's nine year old U17 discus record by seven metres with 30.52 finishing sixth at Blackpool. Bethany Baxter won her 100m heat in 13.2, cleared the high jump with 1.30 (8th) and threw the javelin 20.18 (10th). Taylor Caton-Hand set a pb 1.60 for third in the high jump, ran 12.8 in the 100 and finished with 24.76 in the discus.  Results

Great Langdale Half Marathon, Lake District  25 September

Mark Liptrot and Peter Johnson raced the Great Langdale half marathon, described by Peter as a fell race on the road both returned creditable times. Mark (1:35:40) came in overall 29th (5th in age group).  Peter (1:45:37) came in overall 87th (22nd in age group).  Mark in particular was plese with his time, knocikg 18 minutes off his time there last year. Mark put his improvement down in part to the motivation from training in the senior's group and the high quality, focussed training sessions. If you are thinking of entering your first race, or want to improve your time come and join us, whatever your level - it works and it's fun.

Club Training Weekend, Lake District  24-26 September

Thirteen athletes attended the club's first training weekend - unlucky for some, mainly those who missed it! Following the warm up exercises on Saturday including a "short" orienteering course and a "quick" run around the area, the group set out for a trot up Dale Head and some excellent ridge running to Cat Bells.

The weather was kind, perfect for running capping a fantastic weekend. Sure none of the group will complain about hill reps at Pets Corner ever again.

Liverpool Throws Meeting: 20 September

Taylor Caton-Hand again broke the club U15 hammer record with a throw of 37.03, finishing fifth at Liverpool, Taylor took second place in the triple jump with a pb 11.21. Patricia Spark was second in the hammer (32.67) and third in the shot (8.46). Result

National JuniorLeague 2011 - Your opinion counts !

The Committee is considering whether the club should compete in the National Junior League in 2011.

Phil Thomas will coordinate pre-event requirements (travel, selection, etc.,) next season, so now all we need is commitment from athletes who think they would like to participate.

U20s can do five events each - they can all be individual events.
U17s can do three individual events or four events in total as long as one of them is a relay.

Some advantages of competing in the Junior League include:-

1) Athletes can choose their own event, even if they only want to do one. Unlike other Leagues where covering all events is vital there is no pressure to compete for the points. This is particularly useful for people doing exams who can turn up in time for their event and get back to studying immediately.

2) The League provides proper competition, teaching race strategy rather than just times.

3) For throwers and hurdlers, the throwing implements and hurdles are specifically for the Junior/U17 age group which provide an opportunity to test events before trying them at senior level.

4) There is a full programme so athletes have a wide range of events from which they can choose.

Feedback to Date:

As of Thursday 30 September, 27 (twenty-seven) athletes have confirmed they wish to be considered for the National Junior League subject to availability. Could anyone who has yet to indicate their availability please contact Phil Thomas, who is coordinating the recruitment of athletes for the NJL, so he can (in conjunction with relevant coaches) integrate winter coaching and competition strategies.

North West Road Relays 18 September, Leigh Sports City.

Two Senior men’s teams competed in the NW Road Relays at Leigh Sports Village on Saturday 18th September on a fast flat mix of trail and road 5km course at a fantastic venue.  The course was very well thought out for spectators and runners alike . Contesting in the A team the Merseyside quartet 1st out was John Ashcroft (15.03), 2nd leg Jake Healey (16.53), 3rd leg Barry Graney (17.18) & 4th leg Alan McNally (17.49) finishing in a combined time (1:07.03), 8th place amongst the 16 Merseyside Teams.

In a mixed Merseyside & Cheshire 'tailwind' B team comprising of 1st leg Mark Davies (17.02), 2nd leg Steve Tate (18.12), 3rd leg Ian Hayburn (18.36) & 4th leg Phil Robinson (21.44) back to racing after injury, finishing in a combined time (1:15.34), 16th place.

An excellent start to the Road Racing season. Well done to all those who competed.

The Senior Women's Dream Team of Helena McGoldrick, Sharon Nunn and Chris Dempsey were delighted to have been awarded 3rd Merseyside team in the senior ladies competition although they were unable to claim the medals as Helena is not a Merseyside resident. A great result for a bunch of veterans.

Under 13 girls achieved a great 3rd Merseyside team at Leigh. First leg was Danielle Webb having an outstanding run and handing over to Lucy Griffiths. Bringing the team home was Adele Tate on third leg, bringing the team home in the medals. Sorry no positions or times due to an error by the organisers .

The

The U15 girls brought home the silver medal with Rachel Mcgoldrick on first leg, Vicky Lamb on second and Maria Mcgoldrick on third, chasing down and passing Wirral near the end . All 3 girls had great runs.

The U15 boys team unfortunately consisted of just Matty Shirling taking the first leg on and coming home around 30 seconds in front of his rivals. Quote of the day goes to the lead cyclist...' have you seen how fast that little lad is running' as he nearly fell off his bike on the gravel! Lets try and recruit some team mates for Matty during the Cross Country season.

A big thanks to our Team managers on the day who were Lynn Webb and Helena McGoldrick.
Next relay is the Northern Champs to be held at Wythenshawe. Good luck to all.

Annual General Meeting 6 September

A good turnout attended the club's Annual General Meeting held at the Bull and Dog.  This year's meeting was important in that we had proposed changes to the club’s constitution and needed the support of the members to pass this proposal.  The new constitution takes best practice from England Athletics and expands on the principles of our original constitution.  Anyone who hasn’t read it yet (and who has a couple of hours to spare!) can find it on the website and in the club house.

The Treasurer reported that the club's finances remained sound but that expenditure to replace aging equipment would be required next year.  Following further rises in the track hire it was proposed that we raise the nightly subscription to a flat rate of £1, capped at £2 for families.  After much debate the change was accepted and will come into effect from 1st Jan 2011

The AGM discussed what has been a solid year for the club; with increased membership, a slew of new club records and a good number of school and county representations. It is the club's aim to serve its athletes but to achieve this aim we need to increase the numbers volunteering and broaden active involvement to all disciplines.

Owing to a late withdrawal, the election of the committee was deferred.  The committee will now be elected at a Special General Meeting, called for three weeks time, 30 September at 8pm at the club house.  This will give more time for everyone to consider their role in the club and give them the chance to get involved.  The nomination form for volunteers to the committee will again be displayed on the notice board at the club house.

Cheshire League 5 August

There were good performances from athletes who attended the final Cheshire League match at Ashton Under Lyne. Sophie Rigby won the high jump Michael Causer won the long jump, took second in the 100 and tried his hand at discus, almost reaching 22 metres.

Taylor Caton-Hand had victories in the high jump and shot putt and was third in the 100m. Jamie Dinnar continued his winning streak by taking first place in the javelin. Bethany Baxter was well placed in the 200m, long jump and discus, while Chloe Rigby pulled off two wins in the 200m and long jump. The McGoldrick twins contested the 800m and we had U11 performances from Aaron Price and E Mawdsley. Colin Sparks and Helen McGoldrick organised the athletes. Results

XC 3 September

Dave Forrester opened his cross country season recording 20.52.12 at the Covered Bridge open over 8km at Boone, North Carolina. Dave was forty sixth but there appears to have been some tactical running as ten Florida State University athletes crossed the line within two seconds of each other, owing to the fact that team positions were decided on times not position Results..

Fixtures:

There are two meetings this weekend. SouthportWaterloo stage an Open Meeting at Litherland on Saturday while the final Cheshire League match takes place at Ashton Under Lyne on Sunday. Details of the former are on the SWAC website while details of Sunday's match are available from team manager Colin Spark on 01744 633869
