ESSA Championships 9 & 10 July - Birmingham

Friday:

Matthew Shirling reached Saturday's final of the JB 1500m, recording a National Standard 4.13.89 finishing fourth in his heat. John Ashcroft, who's been holidaying in Barcelona since Sunday, missed qualifying for the SB 1500m final by two places in a time of 4.01.12. Heather Drillingcourt recorded 12.69 taking sixth place in her SG 100m heat while Patricia Spark threw the hammer 30.67 to claim nineteenth place in the IG final. Matthew Crehan claimed tenth spot in the 1500m heat in 4.10.59. According to Jim Crehan, Matt  "was ideally placed with 300m to go when a sharp pain in his troublesome calf caused him to slow down and hop to the finish line." Hopefully rest, recovery and recuperation will see him make a quick comeback.

Saturday:

Matthew Shirling finished fourth in the JB 800 in another national standard time (4.14.94) - the race was won in 4.13.10 - while Katherine Sumner took sixteenth place in the SG Hammer with 35.37m, with her one legal throw. Michael Causer, whose participation was in doubt owing to injury, finished twentieth with 5.93 in the IB long jump. Congratulations to all athletes. Hopefully this will act as motivation to compete in national championships in the future.
