In the U20 men's competition Luke Towers had two fine runs to win the 3000m and the 2000m steeplechase, the former after doing all the hard work. The McGoldrick twins scored a double-first in the 800m, Lucy Griffiths was second in the 200 and 400 while Louise Fairclough marked her U17 debut by competing in the discus, javelin and shot putt, recording 7.02 in the latter. Heptonstall Fell Race
It turned out to be a nice day for 15 miles with 3200ft of ascent round Calderdale. 208 runners lined up on the cobbles in the centre of Heptonstall, with the vicar giving a sermon before starting the race with a handbell. A very good, mostly runnable route, with a welcome water/flapjack stop after about 10 miles and a killer final climb before a run in to the finish. Greg Carns finished 71st in 2:33:16. The vicar was there again at the finish serving flapjacks/biscuits/tea/coffee/water/juice. Back to race HQ, the Cross Foxes pub to watch the presentation and enjoy some free homemade soup and bread – very tasty. The race is the same weekend as Heptonstall beer festival weekend so there was time for a quick pint before heading home – with a choice of 40 guest ales it was a pity there was no nominated driver on hand... A very good race and great value at only £6 – highly recommended. Greg reckons the flapjacks were worth the entry fee alone!
