Snowdonia Marathon : Saturday 25th October
8 veterans were among the 1750 starters who ran the Snowdonia marathon on Saturday 25th October.
This is a very tough course, climbing the Llanberis pass in the first five miles and then hitting the "Welsh Wall" of near vertical tarmac between miles 22 and 24 before a leg destroying plunge back to Llanberis to be cheered to the finish by a very enthusiastic crowd.
Andy Wilson ran a perfectly paced race to finish in 3:14:05. Mark Liptrot was 40 seconds behind in 3:14:46 and third in the V50 category. Greg Carns stormed home in 3:28:22 achieving a long held ambition to dip under three and a half hours. Ian Hayburn was next to complete the monster course in 3:39:56. The ever improving Sonya Monaghan beat 4 hours and her St Helens Sutton male rivals to finish top ten in her age category with 3:53:41. Though beaten by Sonya, Gary also achieved his aim of dipping under 4 hours in 3:57:02. Jonny Ford had a storming half marathon but a stomach bug left him struggling - he still managed to finish in 4:26:02. Bringing the club home was Tom Fitzpatrick in 5:32:20. Many put their excellent runs down to the structured and challenging training on club nights. The club has a number of adult running groups from beginners to advanced and caters for a wide range of abilities and ambitions.
Liverpool and District Cross Country League Match 1, Beacon Park : Saturday 25th October
Due to other race commitments the club relied on its young women to step up and make sure the club finished a team in the first L&D match, the tough Beacon Park course.

Sandstone Trail Race
On 27 September Mark Liptrot and Sonya Monaghan took on the 17 mile Sandstone Trail race as part of their Snowdonia Marathon preparation.
The Sandstone Trail starts near Maiden Castle and runs past Beeston Castle and finishes in Delamere Forest. It is a scenic, varied and quite tough course, though there is a slightly easier and shorter option of the 10 mile B race from Beeston Castle. Sonya is not afraid of anything, though she said that she found her first “trail” race one of the hardest races she’d done due to the distance and terrain: up hill, down dale, through woods and cornfields on tracks, paths and roads. She still managed to finish in the top half of the field. Mark had run the B race in 1998 and this was his third time on the A race. He came in 13th overall and won the V50 category in a pb time of 2:12:29.
