Two Lads Race, Horwich - Thursday 12th June Thursday Evening, 12th June, saw a strong club presence at the Walsh Two Lads Fell Race at Horwich with seven members turning out in a field of 195. A beautiful sunny evening provided perfect race conditions for the fourth race in the clubs fell race competition. The course measured approx 5.5 miles and saw a long trek up the hills but with gradients that could be managed without resorting to a walk (if you were fit enough…!). As usual the vast majority of runners were in the Over 40’s category with 136 runners in this group – showing how accessible fell running is to all ages. And, as usual, a friendly atmosphere welcomed everyone round in times ranging from 32:51 to 1:31:28. The race saw Greg Carns storm home in 41:04 – a great performance which was 60th on the night. Dave Hampson was next home in 43:43 (91st) with Gary Oldham finishing on 45:01 (107). Ian Hayburn, on his way back from injury, was home in 45:15 (110) with Jonny Ford on 45:49 (121) closely followed by Ian Roberts on 46:08 (124) The club’s only female runner in the race, Sonya Monaghan, put in her usual strong performance to finish in 48:57 (145) and 7th in her age category. Well done to everyone! Report by Jonathon Ford Trafford Grand Prix Track Race, Longford Park, Trafford - 11th June
Phil Robinson and Andrew O'Connor made the short journey to Manchester to
compete in the popular midweek Trafford Grand Prix Track Races. Henderson’s End Fell race I’ve got to admit to being a tad anxious prior to the race, I never quite managed to make any of the other Fell races the others had done in our running group and whilst they all only had good things to say about them I got the impression there was an unspoken understanding that experience on the road and track will only get you so far running 984 foot up a big hill. I don’t particularly know the area around Rivington Pike so it was also something of a journey into the unknown, when it was pointed out to me that we’re running up to that big mast when we had nearly arrived I thought, “Blimey” We were greeted by lots of friendly smiles and handshakes, “Oo eck, eers the scoosers” was heard under breath (Liptrot a scouser!!!), Mark and Greg were both a little too happy at the £4 entry fee Myself, Gary Oldham, Mark Liptrot and Greg Carns were running for the club and the race organisers from Lockstock gave out pre-race instructions at the start (which was a gate in the woods) and off we went. It was a relatively small field of 86 runners, which, on chatting to a few at the start, was less than usual. The start of the race involves a lot of cobble stones before the first hill so you’ve got to constantly have your wits about you, then a steep descent before the first hill which I naively thought I could run up. That didn’t last long and after realising only the race winners would be attempting to run the hills I slotted in amongst the runners with hands on thighs pounding up the hill. It was glorious weather and in amongst gulps for breath I tried to take in the wonderful views and ignore the nutters on mountain bikes zooming past at neck breaking speed, half of me wanted to see them face first in the dirt when I got at the bottom of the hill. Unfortunately this never came to fruition. After reaching the half way turn around point the harsh reality of what goes up must come down hit home. The burn in your legs hit its peak as 60 year old buff clad seasoned fell runners sprung down the descents like spring lambs on their fifth cup of espresso. I’ll have a go of that I thought and bolted down a hill only to end up face first in moss and mud, whilst a young buck skipped over me laughing! I reigned in the eyeballs out approach and started to get a feel for how much to push it going downhill, hopefully this will get better with experience I was greeted at the finish line by hoards of midges and lots of well dones and handshakes. In the middle of his Iron man training Mark finished first out of us - 20th overall in a time of 57.44, Greg finished 30th in a time of 59.12, Gary came 49TH with a time of 64.41 followed by me coming in a slightly muddied but thoroughly enjoyable 66th position with a time of 69.45. When’s the next one????
