YDL (upper) Match 4 : Warrington - Sunday 27th July On 27th
July, 12 young athletes competed in the final YDL held at Warrington. The
conditions were warm but windy. 2 club records were achieved and 8
personal bests. Greg Carns, Mark Liptrot, Ian Hayburn and Gary Oldham made the short trip over to the Famer’s Arms at Bispham, near Parbold, for Harrock Hill fell race, the sixth race in the club fell champs. We were met in the car park by a familiar face – Maurice Collins. Then we bumped into Tony Smith at registration –that’s 6 runners and first St Helens runner decided then. In true-fell runner style the excuses were reeled off before the start:- Greg Carns – “I’m not sure how I’ll do as I did Snowdon on
Saturday and a track session last night” It’s a 10 minute walk to the start of the race and we had a chance to warm up on the first section which is half a mile of uphill along a lane. Then we were off and as with all short races the temptation to start too fast couldn’t be resisted. After about 2 miles I was wondering if I could keep going much longer, but a nice long uphill section gave a bit of a chance for recovery and though I wasn’t gaining any places, I wasn’t losing any either. There were a few short unexpected ascents towards the end which I wasn’t expecting and also a frustrating downhill track where a very cautious runner blocked any chance of getting past. Once over the stile and into the field I got past him and another runner and managed to hold them off on yet another uphill stretch to the finish. It’s advertised as 5.2 miles and 900ft ascent and it’s yet another race that starts and finishes in the same place yet seems to have a lot more uphill than downhill - a lovely scenic route over fields, tracks and paths. Some good performances with a great turnout of 191 runners enjoying perfect weather for a summer’s evening run:- 6th Tony Smith – 36:52 It was a lovely evening so it would have been rude not to enjoy a pint of recovery drink before heading home. Theakston’s “Tour de Wot” hit the spot - it was especially brewed to mark the 2014 Tour de France Yorkshire staging, apparantly. We didn’t have time to stay for the results and prizes, which are boxes of fruit and veg, donated by a local farmer. Ian Hayburn won one last year after a great run in his age category. This was the 3rd race in the Harrock Hill series, which is run every year on the 4th Wednesday in May, June, July and August. They can be entered either as individual races at £3.50 or £10 for the series. Highly recommended and suitable for road and off-road runners – the next one is on the 27th August. Report by Greg Carns.
Trafford Grand Prix - Stretford 22nd July
A busy night at the track saw perfect conditions and a
great atmosphere as athletes race for pb's against the clock.
Maria & Rachel McGoldrick had a great race in the 800m and couldn't be separated
on the line with only hundredths between them
3000m Barry Graney 10:41.34 800m Tom Griffiths 2:01.38 (pb), Jake Healey 2.19.78 (sb), Phil Robinson 2.24.07, Maria McGoldrick 2:29:41 (pb) and Rachel McGoldrick 2:29:46 (pb). 1500m Maddie Williams 5.22 53 (pb by 7 seconds), Adam Woosey 4.38.23 (pb, first 1500 race) and Jonathan Causer 4.42.75 (pb) Supporters were Ray Vose, Ingrid Partington and Helena McGoldrick.
Junior T&F Competitions There is a bit of a lull in competitions over the summer and all but a couple of the T&F league fixtures are complete. Please see the fixture list below for the remaining dates. The Opens and Cheshire League are all good for inexperienced athletes to try.
Snowdon International Race & Ironman UK A busy weekend for St Helens Sutton’s more mature athletes. Greg Carns and ian Hayburn took part in the International Snowdon Race. This famous event attracts around 700 runners from all parts of the UK and as far afield as the USA. The race was shortened this year because of the “threatening” weather and only ran three quarters of the way up Snowdon before hurtling back down again. Greg finished in 1:04:05, that’s 42 minutes up and 22 minutes down for the flying Gregster who finished top ten in his age category and took some notable scalps. It just goes to show that losing weight, proper training and no regard for personal safety on the descent can pay dividends. Ian Hayburn came in 1:15 Just returning from injury and in his first running of the race. Although it is called a “mountain” race it is accessible to anyone with a reasonable level of running fitness and is highly recommended. The support on the mountain and especially at the finish is legendary and gives the event a “big race” feel akin to that marathon in London, but a lot cheaper, a lot closer to home, a lot less hassle, easier to get in and with better views. Mark Liptrot completed the Ironman UK event in Bolton: a triathlon consisting of a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride followed by a marathon. A good day out requiring a reasonably high pain tolerance, but more importantly, a superhuman boredom threshold. Mark paced himself perfectly throughout the event, completing the swim in 1hr 29mins, the bike in 6hrs 27mins and the marathon in 4hr 2mins but he missed his overall target of 12 hours by a mere 12 minutes because he took too long to change his shoes. Both events will be televised some time soon.
