Oulton Park Half Marathon, Little Budworth : Sunday 23rd Feb

Gemma Connelly raced at this new event finishing in the top ten overall and well clear as first lady (9th, 83.04).

National Cross Country Championships, Wollaton Park, Nottingham : Saturday 22nd Feb

Saturday 22nd February 2014 saw the National Cross Country Championships held at Wollaton Park, Nottingham. The conditions were surprisingly dry however underfoot the ground was very wet and muddy in areas.
There were 8 athletes representing the club.
First off for the club was the under 17 ladies 5km, this race included Rachel McGoldrick, Maddie Williams and Maria McGoldrick. All three girls ran strong, Rachel finished 130th in a time of 22.29, whilst Maddie finished with only one shoe in 145th in 22.45 and Maria finished in 162nd in 23.21.
Next off for the club was the junior men's 10km race. This saw Luke Towers run a fantastic race to finish in 61st in a time of 34.18! Also in this race was Callum Lockett finishing 110th in a time of 36.25 and Jamie White finished 158th in 39.33. All three lads ran excellent!
Finally for the club was the senior men's 12km race. This consisted of Andy O'Connor who finished in 1108th place in a time of 52.23 and Peter Johnson finished 1414th in 57.48.
Well done to all 8 athletes who travelled to Nottingham for the National Cross Country, the club appreciates your efforts!

The club would also like to wish Maria and Rachel McGoldrick good luck for the English Schools Cross Country Championships held at Castle Donnington Leicestershire on Saturday 15th March.

Warrington Park Run : Saturday, 22nd February

The club had three runners in the latest Warrington park run.
Julia Eccleston 49th in 23:33, Gemma Aden 113th in 28:40 and Christine Dempsey 123rd in 29:07.
 

Sports Centre Parking

There was an outbreak of vandalism at the Sports Centre on Wednesday night with cars broken into and equipment stolen.
Please make sure all sports kit is out of sight.

Stuttgart Lauf 28 / 29 June 2014

St Helens is twinned with Stuttgart and every year there is a sport festival in Stuttgart. Seniors are invited to apply for 3 places to race in Stuttgart over the weekend of 28 / 29 June 2014. Competitors are invited to take part in Stuttgart Lauf http://www.stuttgart-lauf.de/ There is an English version of this website but it seems to come up with 2013 information but you'll get the gist. There is a choice of 7km or half marathon and the races finish at Mercedes-Benz Arena. Stuttgart are offering to fund accommodation for 2 nights ( a choice of 27th, 28th, and 29th June) and pay entry fees. Travel costs would be down to yourself. Please contact Chris Dempsey if you wish to be considered who will forward your details to St Helens Council who are liaising.

YDL Venue Changes

Liverpool and District Championships, Clarke Gardens, Liverpool : Sunday 10th February.

Despite clashing with the final Manchester League meeting we saw a strong team turn out from the club for this historic local race.

Luke Towers (9th, 35:50) had a great run to come home in the top ten of this quality field, well supported by Calum Lockett (14th, 36:55).  Tom Griffiths (30th, 39:35), Andy Wilson (34th, 40:05), Owen Sharp (43rd, 41:59) and Wayne Joyce (82nd, 48:18) completed the scoring six.  Providing good support were Ray Vose (85th, 49:14), Peter Johnson (87th, 50:28) and Tony Doyle (95th, 56:58).

The team scored well coming 5th team overall and showed signs of a return to competitiveness and a big improvement from last year's result.

Manchester League Cross Country Series - Overall Standings

Some of the club's individuals performed consistently over the six match series and were rewarded with good positions in the overall standings.

U11 Girls  - Ellie Doyle finished 31st,  Elizabeth Greenall 36th and Amber Escoffery 42nd.
U11 Boys - Charlie Roberts finished 9th with
Michael Brussels 22nd.
UI3 Girls  - Kanyarat Avison
finished 38th,  Lucy Price 39th and Beth Haughey 40th.
U13 Boys - Joe Houghton finished 15th.
U15 Girls  - Sam Price finished 20th.
U15 Boys - Joseph Woods finished 20th.

U17 Women - Rachel McGoldrick finished 9th with Maria McGoldrick 14th.

Senior Women -  Gemma Connelly finished 1st Senior Woman and Julia Eccleston finished 9th (V40). 
Senior Men -  Ian Roberts was 20th (V40), Barry Graney 5th (V45) and Andrew O'Connor 15th (V50).

In addition to the individual series, the Men's Vet Team won their division and are promoted to division 1 next season.

Overall Standings

Manchester League Cross Country Match Five, Wythenshawe Park, Wythenshawe, Manchester : Saturday 9th February

Saturday 8th February saw 23 athletes participate in the final Manchester Area Cross Country League held at Wythenshawe Park, Manchester. The conditions were very cold, wet and windy.
 
Representing St Helens Sutton AC first of all were the under 11 girls. Elizabeth Greenall ran a superb race and led the girls home in 36th place with a time of 10.49, she was shortly followed by Ellie Doyle who finished quickly in 38th position in 11.02. Also for the club was Harriet King who completed the 2200m course with one shoe on, she ran really well regardless and finished in 46th place in 12.01 and Amber Escoffery ran consistently to finish 50th in 12.35. The under 11 girls team finished 11th overall.

 
Secondly for the club were the under 11 boys and under 13 girls 2400m course. Michael Brussels ran a determined race to finish in 28th place in a sharp time of 11.35. For the girls, Beth Haughey led them home in 49th place in a fantastic time of 12.28. She was quickly followed by Chloe Orrick who finished in 50th position in 12.30. Lucy Price brought the team home in 51st place in 12.43 and showed determination. The under 13 girls team finished 13th overall.
 
Once again for the under 13 boys was Joe Houghton. Joe ran a great race to finish in 22nd place in a quick time of 13.20, unfortunately Joe did not have a team, but he made the club proud! Also in this 3150m race was the under 15 girls. Samantha Price finished 22nd in a fantastic time of 14.50 whilst Alex Glynn covered the course in 31st position in 17.10.
 
Next for the club was the under 15 boys. This 4300m race consisted of Anthony Walker who finished well in 26th place in 21.44, he was followed by Joseph Woods who ran brilliant to finish 27th overall in a time of 23.08. Finally Connor Whalley brought the boys team home in 28th place in 23.25. The under 15 boys team finished 6th overall. This 4300m race saw the under 17 ladies too. Rachel McGoldrick led the girls home in 13th place in 20.39, Maria McGoldrick finished in 18th place in 21.21 despite falling over in the muddy conditions, whilst Maddie Williams ran a strong race to finish in 19th place, in 22.30. The girls packed well as a team and finished 4th overall.
 
For the senior ladies, Gemma Connolly ran an excellent 6250m race, finishing 2nd overall in 25.02; well done!
 
Meanwhile, for the senior men John Greenall covered the distance of 9350m in 50th position in a time of 37.56 whilst Barry Graney finished in 90th place in 39.41. Ian Costello finished in 116th place in a time of 41.21 and Andy O'Connor finished in 159th position in 43.10 whilst Johnny Ford finished in 209th in a time of 45.33. The senior men's vets team finished 10th overall.
 
Well done to everyone who competed in the MACCL this year, the club appreciates all of your efforts. Lets hope to have a greater turnout next year!

Warrington Park Run : Saturday, 8th February

We had four athletes in this Park Run.  Julia Eccelston finished 54th in 23:56. Rachel Wilcock and Rachel Beesley finished together in 29:21 (121st & 122nd) with Chris Dempsey not far behind in 29:50 (130th).


Merseyside Sportshall Squad

Congratulations and well done to the 19 athletes who have been selected to represent Merseyside in the County Sportshall Finals in Manchester on 15th March.

Under 13's - Jorden Pilkington, Lauren Marshall, Kaitlin Naylor, Mia Langton, Ethan Murray and Daniel Dobson.

Under 15's - Matthew, Daniel and Christopher Lamb, David Barrow, George Asson, Lewis Cowan, Jacob Beesley, Megan Lang, Emily Smith, Caitlin Young, Erin Makin, Zoe Pye and Olivia Harwood-Moss.

We understand that several other club athletes were really unlucky to miss out on selection on this occasion. We hope that you have a great day and wish you good luck.

Merseyside County Schools Cross Country, Sefton Park : Saturday 1st Feb

Saturday 1st February saw the Merseyside County Schools Cross Country held at Sefton Park. The conditions were very cold whilst the ground was soft and muddy underfoot. There were 21 athletes representing St Helens.

Firstly, representing the primary school boys was Charlie Roberts who finished 4th in 6.26 swiftly followed by Michael Brussels whom finished the 1.5km course in 15th position in 7.05. The St Helens team finished 3rd place overall.

Secondly for the club was the primary school girls, Ellie Doyle led the team home in 9th position in a quick time of 7.46, followed by Elizabeth Greenall who finished in 13th place in 8.02. Amber Escoffery covered the 1.5km course in 19th in a time of 8.24, closely followed by Imogen Harwood Moss who finished in 20th place in 8.25. Hollie Brussels covered the course in 8.45 in 24th position. The girls finished in 3rd and 7th.
Thirdly for the club was the Year 7 girls’ team. They covered the distance of 2km and the team consisted of Imogen King who ran excellent and finished in 12th position in 8.21 she has been selected to compete for Merseyside in a county schools cross country- well done! Also Bethany Haughey finished in 28th in 8.54 whilst Lucy Price also finished strong finishing in 29th in 8.58 and Elizabeth Griffiths finished the course in 30th place in 9.00! The girls packed well as a team and finished 4th.

Next off for the club was the Year 7 boys' race, this included Joe Houghton. He ran a fantastic race and finished the 2.5km course in 7th place in 10.52. Joe also was selected to compete in the county schools, this is a fantastic achievement!
The Year 8 and 9 boys were next for the St Helens team. This included: Sam Thomson who covered the 3.5km course in 29th place in 14.37, he was shortly followed by Anthony Walker who finished in 43rd in 16.07 and Joseph Woods finished in 45th place in 16.53. The team was 5th.
Meanwhile, Samantha Price finished the Year 8 and 9 girls 3km course sharply in 26th place in an excellent time of 13.37. Chloe Orrick ran the race superbly and finished 29th in 13.54. Emily Ashton covered the course in 32nd place in a great time of 14.08 whilst Kanyarat Avison finished 37th in 14.21. Rosie Dwyer finished the race in 40th place in a time of 15.25 and shortly followed by Natalie Tate who finished in 41st place in 15.41. The team finished 5th overall.

Next for the club was the Year 10 and 11 boys 6km race, this consisted of Adam Woosey who finished in 14th place in a time of 22.30.

The Year 10 and 11 girls was represented by Maddie Williams. She ran a strong race and finished 11th in 16.23. Also in the same race was Maria McGoldrick who represented the Year 12 and 13 girls, she covered the 4km course in 5th place in a time of 15.29- she will be competing in the English Schools on 15th March 2014 representing Merseyside at Leicestershire. Well done Maria! The St Helens team finished 2nd overall.

Well done to all athletes who represented St Helens in the schools cross country!

Halewood 5k, Saturday 1st Feb

Three club runners turned out for this local 5k, held each month and free to enter.
Making a welcome return to racing, Stan Erlam lowered the fastest time for his age category by nearly ten minutes (25:24).  Dot Fairhurst followed suit setting the fastest time for her category (30:77), and not to be outdone Julia Eccleston set her pb for the course (22:39).

2014 Annual Subscriptions

The committee would like to remind all members that their annual subscriptions for 2014 were due last month.  If you haven't filled a membership form in recently why not update the club with your contact details and any relevant medical notes.  Fees are listed on the membership form (or see link on left - Join Us).  Don't forget nightly track fees are now £2 for non members so save yourself some money and join us.
