Princes Parkrun - Saturday 28th September

15 club members made an early start to take part in the latest leg of the Club Championship and travelled over to Liverpool for the Princes Park Parkrun.

Barry Graney and Ian Costello had fantastic runs, both finishing in the top 10 with Barry narrowly missing out on 3rd place in a sprint finish by just 100th of a second. They recorded 18.20 (4th) and 18.24 (6th) respectively.

Antony Young completed the men's contingent finishing in his best time this year of 23.43 in 60th position overall.

Once again the Senior Ladies put the men's team to shame with a superb turnout.

Karen Mawdsley was first to finish in 27.43 followed by Dot Fairhurst (28.09), Karen Harrison (28.20), Rachel Wilcock (28.38), Rachel Beesely (31.16), Laura Anthony (31.58), Karen Young (32.17), Pauline Picton (35.02), Andrea Beesely (37.42), Kay Wilcock (39.23), Wendy Anthony (41.10),

Rosie Dyer also had a superb run as our only Junior finishing in 109th place in a time of 27.16 in her 1st ever Parkrun. Well done Rosie.

Red Rose League Cross Country

With one eye on the Cross Country Season,  Andy O'Connor ran as a guest in the Red Rose League at Leigh on Saturday. He finished in 41:22 and finished 46th vet out of 122 and 105th out of 214 overall.

Time to clean off those trail shoes and spikes, the hills and the mud are coming.  Cross country fixtures are now added to the fixture list.

Billy McMinnis 1915-2013

St Helens-Sutton A C regret to announce the death of club president R W 'Billy' McMinnis who passed away on Saturday 21 September 2013, aged 98.

Billy started running at the age of 21 in the 1936/37 cross country season and quickly made his mark by anchoring Sutton Harriers to the Northern cross country title at Worsley. In 1939 Billy was again in the team which won the title and when cross country resumed in 1946/47 was in the team which won five consecutive Northern titles and four National titles (they finished second to Belgrave in 1948). Between 1947 and 1953 the team was unbeatable in the West Lancs Championships Billy capping their 1953 victory by winning the individual title at West Kirby.

Billy's stamina came from two sources. When he started running all athletes received a massage after training and Billy didn't like the cold hands of the club's masseur so a team-mate advised him to stay out longer and miss the massage. The other was the fact that Billy's job was as a P E instructor in the RAF and he would run each morning from his home to the RAF station at Padgate, spent the entire day teaching and demonstrating PE before running home in the evening, a round trip of 14 miles a day, followed by a race on Saturdays. During the summer fitness was maintained by participating in the popular two mile track team races, especially against local but friendly rivals Pembroke.

Billy moved on to longer distances winning the Liverpool, Polytechnic and AAA Marathons, making a dramatic entrance into veterans' athletics by winning world titles at 5000m and 10000m. He always looked resplendent in his blazer and never lost that military bearing which he acquired during his time in the RAF.

Our thoughts are with his wife Doreen and daughter Elizabeth and other members of the McMinnis family. The funeral will take place at St Helens Crematorium on Monday 30 September at 2.30.p.m.

Liverpool Grand 10k, Aintree

Luke Towers marked his return to competition by claiming third place with veterans Maurice Collins and Denis Wharton also completing the course.

                29 Maurice Collins 42.39

Club AGM

A reminder that the club AGM takes place on 30th September at 7.30pm at the Bull & Dog over the road from the club, by Lea Green Station. All members are invited to attend and we have some very important news to share regarding the clubs future.

Other Events

If there is enough interest we would like to take part in the World Marathon and 1500m Challenges for Save the Children on Thursday 17th October. The idea is that teams of athletes run short relay legs in an attempt to beat the World Record. The 1500m event is aimed at newer, less experienced athletes and the Marathon distance is for experienced juniors, parents and senior athletes. If you would like to register your interest as an athlete or volunteer please go to the Notice Boards at the club.

On Friday 25th October at West Park RUFC on Prescot Rd we will be holding this year's Wine Tasting Experience for members, friends & family. Tickets are only £9.50 for which you get at least 6 glasses of decent wines and take part in the quiz to match the wines to their tasting notes. Please buy your tickets ASAP from the club.

Seniors Club Championship

The totals have now been amended to include all July & August training points plus the NW Road Relays.

The men's table hasn't altered much with the Top 4 athletes very close together, Ian Roberts just holds onto 1st place closely followed by Barry Graney, Jamie White and Gary Oldham.

The ladies table has had a change at the top. Two great races by Helena McGoldrick added to maximum attendance over the summer has seen her edge into a 1 point lead over both Sonya Monaghan and Dot Fairhurst. Another 5 or 6 athletes are then within catching distance of the leaders so Group Training and attendance at the remaining fixtures will be crucial in deciding the outcome of this inaugural championship.

Alan Davies  1944 – 2013

We regret to announce that Alan Davies who competed for the club in the 1970’s and 1980’s passed away on Monday 9 September aged 69. Alan’s son Anthony and daughter Louisa also represented the club and our thoughts are with them and the rest of the family at this time. Alan’s niece, Sharon Davies, also represented the club in the early 1980’s.

Alan was never the fastest runner in the world but always took pride in finishing the course. Those of us who remember attending the National cross country championships at Parliament Hill will never forget waiting a long time for Alan and John Irwin to return to the hotel after the pair had been so busy talking they had missed changing trains on the way back!!!!

The funeral will take place at St Helens Crematorium on Friday 20 September at 2.30.p.m.
