On Sunday 24th February at the England Athletics Indoor Championships held at Birmingham National Indoor Arena, Michael Causer from St Helens Sutton AC became the National U20 men’s Long Jump Champion winning with a leap of 7.26m. Michael has only been back training for 3 weeks after having been off for seven weeks through illness and injury so this is a great start to 2013 for him. Taylor Caton Hand competed in the U17’s boys long jump and came 5th with a leap of 6.42m. Well done to both of them. National Cross Country, Sunderland : Saturday 23rd February On Saturday 23rd February 2013, 5 young athletes travelled to a cold, snowy Sunderland for the National Cross Country Championships. The first race was the Under 17 Ladies 5k, Rachel McGoldrick finished 106th in 23:04 and Maria McGoldrick came 123rd in 23:52. Well done! Under 20 Ladies were next off; Katie Bowers-Folan running strongly completed the 6km race in 72nd place in 27:45. Under 13 Girls and Under 13 Boys covered the distance of 3000m. Susan Shirling and Joe Ford both competed in their first National Cross Country. Susan finished in 129th place in 13:55 and Joe came 76th in 12:45. Both athletes had strong races. Well done! Team manager: Helena McGoldrick Changes to YDL Upper Fixtures The venues for a couple of the U17 & U20 YDL Fixtures have changed. Please download a new fixture list if you compete in these age groups. Wrexham Half Marathon, Sunday 17th February Following the cancellation of the Helsby half marathon, Gemma Connelly switched to this popular and flat course. The change in schedule obviously didn't affect her much as she came home first senior lady in 80:56 (34th overall). NW Regional Sportshall Finals On Saturday 16th February 14 athletes from the club represented Merseyside in the regional sportshall finals at Wigan. This was the largest representation from the club for quite a few years and reflects how well we have done in the local NW league over the last couple of years.
Congratulations and well done to: Emily Smith, Hannah Seabrook, Caitlin Young, Erin Makin, Zoe Pye, Lorna Glenn, Rebecca Rotheram, Emma Dobson, Daniel Dobson, Jordan Benson, Joseph Woods, Alex Virton, Chris Lamb and Matthew Lamb. Megan Lang, Nathan Carns and David Barrow were also selected but were unfortunately unable to attend. The Merseyside Team suffered badly as a result of no show's from athletes from other clubs. However, many of our athletes shone on the day with some great individual performances. Congratulations to Caitlin Young, Erin Makin and Zoe Pye whose relay team came 3rd in the 4x2 lap, Hannah Seabrook won a Bronze with a High Jump of 1.35m and Emily Smith a Silver with a High Jump of 1.40. Zoe Pye won Gold for a superbly run 4lap final. Christopher Lamb won Gold in the Vertical Jump and older brother Matthew took home 2 Bronze's for 2lap and standing long jump and easily won Gold with an outstanding score of 90 in the Speed Bounce. His combined points score meant that Matthew topped the points in the Boys Under 15 Competition and now goes down to Birmingham NIA as Flag Bearer and Team Captain for the North West in the National Finals. It's the first time that anyone from Merseyside has done this since our own Mike Ehlan and was a great achievement given the level of competition from strong Cheshire and Greater Manchester teams. LJMU Sports Psychology Presentations The first session hosted by the students from LJMU took place on Thursday 14th February. Unfortunately, attendances weren't great but the students received 100% positive feedback with experienced and new parents all commenting on how useful the content was. They are now planning their 2nd presentation which will take place at The Bull & Dog at 6pm and 7pm on Thursday 28th February. Please do your best to attend. School Sportshall Games - Sutton Academy, 12th February 2013 Quite a lot of our U13 / U15 athletes represented their schools today in the town Sportshall comp. I think that one of our girls won every Y8 race on the track this afternoon following on from similar performances from the Y7's this morning, some of whom were team captains. It's great being able to sit with other officials saying "that's one of ours" "and that one" when someone has just won a race by 20 metres! I couldn't see what was happening in the field events but judging by the medals that headed home they must have done okay. Well done to all of you, you definitely did the club proud and demonstrated what a difference dedication, focus and good coaching can make. L&D Cross Country Championships : Clarkes Gardens, Liverpool, 10th February The club managed a team at the popular and historic championship race of the L&D league despite late withdrawals due to injury and illness. Held in very muddy conditions at the regular venue of Clarkes Gardens, this race is always testing. Callum Lockett had a great run to come home first for the club in 15th place (38:21). Ian Costello just held off Barry Graney to finish 47th and 49th in 41:11 and 41:16 respectively (6th and 7th V40). Ian Hayburn had a well paced run to come 69th in 42:28 (10th V45), with Pete Johnson unable to repeat his form from the Northern coming in 84th in 47:07 (15th V40). Ray Vose generously gave the field a start then had a steady run to finish 87th in 47:52 (2nd V50). Louise Hogg was our final team runner and finished 122nd in 53:39 (1st Lady V40, 11th Lady overall). The team finished 9th overall. Manchester League Cross Country, Match 5 : Stockport, 10th February On Sunday 10th February, 12
athletes travelled to Stockport for the last cross country
league.
The men's course was longer than
normal being one small lap and three large and taking in a long
steep hill three times. Andrew O'Connor 48:47 (15th
V50) was first home for the Vets team
just getting the better of Alan McNally
49:28 (16th V50) on the last lap,
closely followed by Ian White 49:45 (17th V50)
who is returning to form
after injury. Special mention must go to
Mark Liptrot who earlier in the day had run
the Winter Hill Fell Race in
snowbound conditions posting a superb 23rd place out of
nearly 200 runners! He ran again at Woodbank Park
and rounded off the Vets Team with a solid 51:27
(20th V50) .
The team's
final League placing was 7th out of 38
teams overall in the Vets section of the
Manchester Cross Country League.
