16 ladies completed the Birchwood 5KM, 5 Club Members then voted with their feet making the Wavertree 5KM a valid Championship Race and then 5 club members ran the Burtonwood 5M race last weekend. Results and the latest league tables can be found below. Ages have been adjusted where we have been notified and a couple of years DOES make a difference so make sure you let Ant know if we have your age recorded incorrectly

YDL (Upper) Clayton Le Moors 28 July

Two club records were the highlight of the YDL match held at Hyndburn where, unlike St Helens, the rain stayed off for most of the day. Ethan Bell became the first U17 javelin thrower to breach the 50m mark with 51.18 while Michael Causer wrote his name into the U20 records with 10.84m in the shot putt.

There were a host of good performances, not always reflected in the times and distances but there were wins for Josh Neal (long jump), Patricia Spark (hammer), Lucy Griffiths (SP), Jonathan Causer (SP), Taylor Caton-Hand (LJ), Chloe Rigby (HJ), Maria and Rachel McGoldrick in the 800 and 1500m while Maddy Williams (1500) and Lauren Wilcock (300) were amongst those who collected second places.

As a result of the efforts of athletes and officials alike the club finished fourth only one point behind Hyndburn but only because we lacked a timekeeper. Many thanks to those officials who scored 30 points between them – Helena McGoldrick (track), Roger McCall, Simon Neal, Phil Thomas, Dave Morley and one other whose name I’ve forgotten (please advise) while Dave also acted as team manager.

Team score: 1 M60 Nomads 478; 2 DASH 316; 3 Hyndburn 303; 4 St Helens-Sutton 302; 5 Horwich RMI 266; 6 Macclesfield 225; 7 Halton & Frodsham 73; 8 Stockport Harriers 27.

Final League Table: 1 M60 Nomads 29 (1713); 2 DASH 29 (1632); 3 Macclesfield 21 (1392.5); 4 St Helens-Sutton 19 (1137); 5 Horwich RMI 18 (1016.5); 6 Hyndburn 14 (837); 7 Stockport 9 (429); 8 Halton & Frodsham 5 (316).

M60 Nomads and DASH are promoted. Border Harriers will be coming down, unless the League is restructured for 2014.

Many thanks to everyone who has competed or helped during the season.  (Dave Morley)

Junior Parents - Please Read

The committee has written this letter to all parents as a result of how busy the club is and the length of our waiting list. Please take 5 minutes to read it and consider the implications for your child.

The vast majority of feedback we've had from the letter has been very supportive. We realise that the situation isn't ideal and we would love to have enough space to train every child in St Helens but the reality is that we don't, so we want to focus on the ones that are serious about athletics and who will help us compete as a team in the leagues.

We are not heavily focused on winning races or field events and don't pressurise the athletes. Just taking part secures us points and the big focus is on PB's as athletes are developing. We agree that some of our very youngest members aren't yet ready to compete and that's fine, but there many older athletes who regularly train, are very capable but are never seen at comps. They are taking training places that could go to someone who wants to be an athlete.

We are trying to please as many people as possible but it's hard to please everyone. Thank you for your understanding and support.

Info about the types of competitions we enter can be found in the Welcome Pack and the remaining Summer Fixtures are listed here

If you want to discuss the letter or have some suggestions for how we might accommodate more children (volunteer anyone?) please ask at the desk or see Colin Spark.

Cheshire League – Sunday 14 July 2013 – Crewe.

The YDL (L) match the previous day prevented many youngsters from travelling to Crewe for the latest Cheshire League match where, according to the confusing scoring system, the club finished third behind Crewe and Halton but ahead of Stockport, Trafford and Manchester.

Phil Robinson represented the senior men while there were more competitors in the senior ladies, including the McGoldrick twins, Rachel Woosey, Lauren Wilcock and Maddie Williams.

Taylor Caton-Hand had three wins, finally raising his high jump pb to 1.67. There were half a dozen U15 girls and a good showing of U11 Boys and Girls, full details of which can be found here Results (Click on Match 3, Crewe)

Northern League Division 2W, Match 3 - Litherland, Sunday 7 June

The senior team finished fourth for the third match in sucession in the latest Northern League match at Litherland and are in a battle to avoid relegation at the final match at Sports City on 3 August. In what has been characteristic of 2013 we had a number of last minute withdrawals owing to injury and illness and were below maximum strength. However, those who were able to attend gave everything to the cause and recorded a number of personal and seasonal bests.

There were wins for Emma McClatchey and Phil Robinson in the pole vault, both with seasonal bests and Patricia Spark in the hammer. Simon Anim-Somuah was drafted in at the last minute and recorded personal bests for the 100, 200 and 400m. Gemma Connolly produced three splendid seconds which included seasonal bests for the 1500 and 3000. Karen Marsh set personal bests in both hurdles races and the hammer throw (which she learned just before the event started!).

There were seasonal bests for steeplechasers Jamie White and Ian Hayburn, both of whom finished second. Chloe and Sophie Rigby set seasonal bests in the 100 and 200 respectively, Josh Neal doing the same over the longer distance. Jake Healy was magnificent at filling in setting seasonal bests in the 800 and 5000 on his road back to fitness. Rachael Woosey set an excellent personal best in the one lap race while Ethan Bell picked up second place in the javelin. Taylor

Caton-Hand produced winning performances in the long and triple jumps. Others who scored essential points for the club included Shelby Jack, Catherine Spark, Amy Hughes, Barry Graney, Sam Miley, Ian Costello, Maria and Rachel McGoldrick, Shannon Partington, Nathan Orr, Michael Hughes, Steve Winn and hurdlers extraordinarie, Ray Vose and Peter Johnson. Apologies to anyone inadvertantly overlooked, please send details and they will be added.

The club produced a full set of officials which included Colin Spark starting, Pam Appleton and Janet Holmes timekeeping, Dave Morley Track and Roger McCall, Christine Dempsey and a variety of other helpers including Helen McGoldrick, Sue Clague, Steve Rigby and Colin Spark in a max and match effort which claimed maximum points.

The final scores (amended) were: 1 West Cheshire 436, 2 LPS 417, 3 IoM 361, 4 St Helens-Sutton 353; 5 Trafford 229; 6 Manchester Harriers 225.
The League positions are:
1 West Cheshire 17.5 (1239); 2 Isle of Man 15.5 (1164); 3 Trafford 11 (973); 4 St Helens-Sutton 9 (1021.5); 5 LPS 8 (996); 6 Manchester Harriers 4 (785.5).

Final Match – Sports City, Manchester, Saturday 3 August 2013.

Jim Crehan : 30.01.54 – 01.07.13

We regret to report that Jim Crehan passed away in his sleep at 4am on Monday 1st June, losing his battle against terminal cancer.  The funeral will take place at St Thomas's church in Ashton-in-Makerfield.  See message from Matt with details of funeral arrangements below.

Dear all

For those that haven’t heard, my dad Jim Crehan sadly passed away at 4am on Monday the 1st of July. He passed away peacefully at home in his sleep with my mum next to him and we had all spent the day by his side, telling him how much he meant to us. As you may know athletics was one of his main loves other than his family and in his last few weeks he planned his funeral and hoped that many of his friends that he had made through athletics would be able to come to his funeral so if you could please forward this information to those you know who you feel would like to know or place the information on your clubs websites or Facebook pages.

The funeral will take place at St. Thomas’ Church, Ashton-in-Makerfield, WN4 9PL at 10:15 on the 16th of July with a Wake after the Church service across the road in St Oswald’s Social Club. My mum would like me to mention that if people wish to bring flowers they are welcome but she would rather, so as to not waste beautiful flowers, people donate to Wigan and Leigh Hospice who have been very helpful over these last couple of years or  Marie Curie Cancer Care or Cancer Research.

Also I do an athletics podcast and will be doing a memorial show for my dad next week, I hope to be able to do some interviews with people who knew my dad, talking about their memories of him running. If anyone would like to add their memories they can email me with their number and any time and day which would suit them best and I will contact them.

Thanks and take care

Photos with Kind permission of Roger McCall.

The cross country pictures are from the Northern at Burnley in February 1975 and there are two pictures from the Northern 12 stage relay the first is from April 1975 and the second from April 1982. The other picture is a 5000metre race in Stuttgart back in September 1978.     Apart from Jim you may identify some familiar faces particularly on the road relay pictures.

Jim was an integral part of the club during his time as an athlete and the courage he has shown in the face of his illness has been immense. Our thoughts are with Sue, Matt and the rest of the Crehan family at this time.

Youth Development League (Upper) Macclesfield 1 July.

The club finished fourth on the day, despite fielding a weakened team, and have moved above Horwich into fourth place overall. Tricia Spark set an U20 club record 42.55 in the hammer which she won, took the shot with a season’s best 9.27 and finished second in the discus.

Sam Miley set a personal best 2.09.9 in winning the 800m, improving his 800m time by over twenty seconds.  Josh Neal equaled his season’s best in the 100m (12.3) while Taylor Caton-Hand won the long (6.28) and triple (12.82) jumps and was close to beating his personal best 1.65. Jonathan Causer won the shot (9.16) and took second place in the discus (23.72).

The McGoldrick twins were in excellent form in the 800 and 1500 supported by Lucy Griffiths and Maddie Williams.

Chloe Rigby was second in the long jump (4.27.) 100m (13.4 and won the high jump 1.45. Lauren Wilcock equaled her season’s best 51.1 in the 300m. In the final relay of the day Lauren, Maria, Lucy and Maddie, left the opposition trailing winning in 3.34.6 with vocal encouragement from club supporters.

A special thanks to Dave Morley (track), Neville Jones (timekeeper), Helen McGoldrick, Colin Spark, Simon Neal, Phil Thomas (until he retired hurt) and Nathan Orr, who officiated despite an injured foot, who covered the field events to ensure we earned the maximum 35 points.
