Double Decathlon
Anyone ever feel there just aren't enough events in a decathlon? Phil Robinson recently competed in a double decathlon consisting of 20 disciplines over 2 days : 100m, long jump, 200m hurdles, shot putt, 5000m, 800m, high jump, 400m, hammer, 3000m steeplechase, 110m hurdles, pole vault, 200m, discus, 3000m, 400m hurdles, javelin, 1500m, triple jump, 10,000m.
Phil finished in the top ten (9th V40) and although not normally
known for his love of long distance he will have enjoyed running what
works out to be more than a half marathon in laps of the track. Phil was
also generously raising money for Willowbrook hospice and I'm
sure that helped him through the 10000 metres!

Despite finishing fourth for the fourth successive match and athletes
providing a dozen personal
bests and a baker's dozen of season's bests, the club narrowly failed to
maintain its place in division
2 (West) after a season blighted by injury and absences. Ironically, had
Manchester managed nine
more points on the day it would have been Trafford relegated instead of
ourselves. The miracle is
that we managed to be so consistent throughout the season despite all
the set-backs which is due to Taylor Caton-Hand showed the way with a club record triple jump of 13.31 and victory in the long jump, supported by Karen Marsh with three personal bests in the hurdles and sprints, while Ethan Bell moved closer to the 50m in the javelin. Matt Crehan returned to competition in the 800 where he and Jamie White were in excellent form. Ian Costello (1500) and Barry Graney (5000) were quicker than last time while Ian Roberts set a personal best in the latter only forty eight hours after running a road race. Amy Hughes responded brilliantly to the demands of the day by competing in her maximum of seven events, the first female athlete in living memory to do so and an ‘athlete of the year’ performance given the injuries she was carrying at the outset. Mainstays Gemma Connolly and Phil Robinson were not at their strongest following absences but Gemma produced a splendid finish in the 1500m to give her encouragement on her return while Phil produced season's bests in the hurdles, long jump and triple jump as he competed in his maxium seven events. Rachel Woosey recorded a personal best 63.3 in the 400m while the McGoldrick twins came up with two second places in the middle distance events, as did Chloe Rigby in the long jump. Patricia Spark won the hammer with Lucy Croft taking second place in the 'B' event. The injury bug struck again when Sophie Rigby had to pull out of the pole vault and Shelby Jack was injured running the 100m. Jake Healy recorded pb's in the 400 and 200 while Jonathan Causer bravely stepped into the breach in the sprints to record personal bests in the 100 and 200. Steve Clague finished third in the 400m hurdles, an event he thought he may never be able to do again after injuring himself in the Isle of Man. Michael Hughes contributed to four throws with Nathan Orr hovering around the 28m mark in the discus.
Thanks to our officials, Dave Morley (track), Ray Vose (timekeeper),
Field judges and helpers
Phil Thomas, Chris Dempsey, Julie Woosey, Chris Causer, Michael Causer,
Nathan Orr and
Adam Woosey so we were able to score maximum points.
