Team Selection Policies As the Junior Section expands and more athletes want to be considered for selection the Committee started to discuss the communication of some selection policies late in 2013 so that everyone knows where they stand and by what criteria the team is selected. These are downloadable from here -

Processes It is early days for these policies so please give them time to bed in and speak to Team Managers or your Coach if you have any concerns.
Junior Fixtures The Junior Fixture List for 2014 was updated on 27th January with the addition of fixtures for Warrington AC. Some of these clash with other Open's so the choice is down to Parents. If you need any advice, please speak to your Coach. NW Sportshall Finals Kingsway, Widnes Sunday 26th January.
On Sunday 26th January our two Under 15's Teams took part in the NW League Finals at Widnes with 14 athletes taking part. Both teams achieved our best results for quite a few years with the Girls coming 3rd in a closely fought competition and the Boys being crowned Champions!! The Team achieved 16 individual medals in a broad range of events showing how well they are developing as multi eventers.
Congratulations and well done to: Matthew Lamb, Christopher Lamb, Daniel Lamb, George Assan,
David Barrow, Lewis Cowan, Jacob Beesley, Special mention must go to Matthew Lamb who once again achieved a clean sweep of 3 individual Gold Medals in 2 Lap, Speed Bounce and Long Jump. His Speed Bounce total was only 4 jumps under the national record which has stood for some time and it came just minutes after he had raced in a hard 2 lap final.
The athletes will now be keeping a keen eye for news of
County Selection for the Regional County Finals on 15th March in Manchester. 2014 Seniors Club Road Championship The fixtures for the 2014 Championship are now available. We are just waiting for 1 or 2 races to confirm their exact details before we can publish the final list but at least you can get the dates in your diary and start thinking about training, logistics etc. Please note that there are a few rule changes from 2013 so read through them carefully so that you understand how to score points most effectively. Karen Harrison has kindly agreed to collate the results this year so please speak to her if you need any clarification of ages etc. 2014 Seniors Club Championship Rules & Fixtures

Northern Cross Country Championships - Knowsley Safari Park : 25th January Saturday 25th
January saw the Northern Athletics Cross Country Championships held at Knowsley
Safari Park for the second year running. The conditions were very wet whilst the
ground was soft and muddy underfoot for the first few races, however the
conditions got increasingly more difficult (especially for the under 15 girls).
If you remember the snow last year and were thinking it couldn't get worse,
think again. Whereas last year the snow actually gave a little purchase
this year it was just slop, all the way round (three times for the seniors
#grump). Secondly for the club was the under 13 girls’ team. They covered the distance of 3km and the team consisted of Kanyarat Avison finishing quickly in 179th place in 15.27, Imogen King who ran excellent finished in 197th position in 16.03, Lucy Price also finished strong finishing in 209th in 16.38 and Sian Glynn finished the course in 219th place in 17.56 with a smile on her face! The girls packed well as a team and finished 36th. Next off for the club was the under 17 men’s race, this included Sam Miley. He ran a fantastic race and finished the 5.8km course in 110th in 25.36. Lonesome under 13 boy, Joe Houghton represented the club despite not having a team. He finished strong in 103rd place and covered the distance of 3km in 13.31. By the time it came to the under 15 girl’s race the conditions had deteriorated, the rain was heavy and the course was wet and boggy. Meanwhile, Samantha Price finished the 4km course sharply in 123rd in an excellent time of 20.03. Alex Glynn started the race superbly however she suffered an injury during the race and was unable to continue- thank you to both girls for trying their best! The conditions were very wet and rainy for the under 15 boys 4km race. Sam Thomson represented the club and finished quickly in 157th place in a time of 18.24 and Joseph Woods ran a gutsy race to finish in 172nd in 22.10. The under 20 men’s race saw Callum Lockett compete in the 8km course. He finished in 44th position in a quick time of 31.17. The Senior Ladies were next off for the club. This 8km race saw Gemma Connolly finish in 21st place in a time of 33.53, Julia Eccleston finished in 145th in 41.52, whilst Sonya Monahan finished 149th in 42.12 and Louise Hogg finished the course in 191st position in a time of 45.36. The ladies all ran excellent and finished 17th as a team. Finally, the senior men’s 12km race. Tom Griffiths led the men home in a strong position of 201st in 51.52, John Greenall finished 217th in a quick time of 52.23 whilst Andy Wilson ran an excellent race in 253rd in 53.23. John Appleton junior finished 289th in an excellent time of 54.15, Barry Graney completed the course with little joy and finished 302nd in a time of 54.36. Meanwhile, Maurice Collins completed the course in 382nd in a time of 58.40; Ian Roberts finished fantastic in 481st in a time of 1.04.03. Ray Vose finished the 8km course in 503rd place in a time of 1.05.57 whilst Peter Johnson enjoyed his run finished 563rd in 1.09.58 and Anthony Doyle returned in his first cross country since his injury at Stockport to finished in 600th position in a time of 1.18.38. The men’s team finished 29th overall. Well done to everyone who competed in the Northern Cross Country. Hope to have full teams out for the last Manchester Area Cross Country League on Saturday 8th February at Wythenshawe Park.

Results Pennington Flash Park Run 25th January Gemma Arden and Pauline Picton ran in the Pennington Flash Park Run clocking 29:21 (86) and 34:14 (127th) respectively. Warrington Park Run 25th January We had three athletes in
this well attended first Warrington Park Run. Rachel Wilcock and
Rachel Beesley finished together in 31:46 (313rd & 314th).
Four Villages Half Marathon, Helsby : Sunday 18th January
Five Sutton athletes joined 1800 other runners for the Helsby Half Marathon on a perfect day for running. Gemma Connolly
once again featured in the medals, winning her age group and coming third
female in the overall race (1st FSEN, 1:21:31). Barry Graney was the
sole male representative and stayed well away from Gemma to run a
comfortable race for a change ( 24th M45, 1:25:59). North of England Championships, Sheffield : Sunday 18th January
Two St Helens Sutton athletes, Michael Causer and Taylor Caton Hand, competed at the North of England Championships at Sheffield on Sunday 18th January. Michael, who is in his last year competing as an U20, not only won gold with a superb jump of 7.41m, but also broke the Championship record. This was Michael’s first competition since picking up a bad injury at the National Championships in June 2013. This is a great start to the year for Michael, as he is hoping to qualify for selection to the World Junior Championships in Eugene USA in July 2014. His next competition in March is the National Indoor Championships where he will be defending his 2013 champion’s title. Taylor, who was competing for the first time as an U20, had stiff competition which left him in fifth place until his last jump of 6.58m moved him up into 3rd place, giving him the bronze medal. Well done to both of them and good luck for 2014. Pennington Flash Park Run 17th January Pauline Picton ran in the Pennington Flash Park Run clocking 34:52 and finishing 197th. Merseyside Schools Cross Country Entries Any athletes that would like to compete in the Merseyside Schools Cross Country on 1st Feb will need to give their details to Sue Clague. You will need to provide your name, school year, school and date of birth. More details here. Please send details to Sue at clagues@sthelens.org.uk by the 31st of January.
10 vets have entered the Snowdonia Marathon in October, entries are still open if others would like to join them. This is regularly voted one of the best, most scenic (and toughest) road marathons in the UK. The club also has a runners racing in the Manchester, Blackpool, Liverpool and London marathons this year. One vet member has entered three of them, and another one who is doing two of them along with the Bolton Ironman! There is now a keen and enthusiastic group of seniors, male and female, who train and travel to races together regularly. Why not join them in one of the groups regularly training on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Come along and get some support for those long miles you'll need to be running, it's much easier running with others!

Congratulations to the U15 Boys & U15 Girls teams who finished in 1st and 2nd places in the NW Sportshall League this season and qualify for the NW League Finals on 26th January. Unfortunately our U11 and U13 teams just missed out on qualification by 1 or 2 places, the final positions can be viewed here. Thank you to all of the athletes who took part this season and to all of the parents for their support. Thanks also to Simon Neal who has been training most of the squad on Tuesday nights. Hopefully we will have a few athletes who qualify for U13 and U15 County Honours on the back of some great performances.
Sunday 12th January, 20 athletes competed at Boggart
Hole Clough, Manchester for the fourth Manchester Area Cross Country
League. The conditions were cold, extremely muddy and wet underfoot. Princes Park run 11th January Alan McNally ran in the Princes parkrun clocking 21:43 and finishing 46th. Pennington Flash Park run 4th January Mark Liptrot ran in the Pennington Flash parkrun clocking 22:19 and finishing 17th. County Championships, Saturday 4th January 2014 Saturday 4th January 2014 saw the cross country
county championships. There were 22 athletes representing the club across
three counties, Merseyside, Lancashire and Cheshire. Cheshire Lancashire Merseyside
2014 Annual Subscriptions The committee would like to remind all members that their annual subscriptions for 2014 should be paid for next year. If you haven't filled a membership form in recently why not update the club with your contact details and any relevant medical notes. Fees are listed on the membership form (or see link on left - Join Us). Don't forget nightly track fees are now £2 for non members so save yourself some money and join us. Please return form with Cheque payable to St Helens Sutton AC to address on membership form or pay at the desk on the night. Happy New Year! Time to put those new year resolutions to the test and burn off a bit of the Christmas pudding. Training resumes as normal at the club on Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting this Thursday 2nd Jan.
