Promotion Match - Leigh -
18 Augustt
The club finished an excellent third in the
promotion match, just missing out on second spot by 29 points. The
margin would have been considerably closer had we been able to field a
full complement of athletes in all events. The men
had three blank spaces and the ladies five. This should give
everyone the incentive to train for additional events during the winter.
Michael Causer equaled his club senior and
junior records with 10.9 in the 100m, Sophie Rigby added two
centimeters to her previous senior long jump record and the 4x400m team
of Rachel Woosey, Chloe Rigby, Rachel McGoldrick and
Katie Bowers-Folan set new figures of 4.19.4. In addition, Emma
McClatchey equaled her own pole vault record with 2.60m.
Tricia Spark set a pb in the hammer, sister
Catherine making a second placed debut in the javelin. The
Rigby sisters won the A & B high jump competitions, a feat also
achieved by hammer throwers Tricia Spark and Kathryn Sumner.
Amy Hughes surprised everyone reaching almost 20m in the discus
without having practiced. Shelby Jack ran two cracking sprints
and Louise Hayes stepped to run the 400 and 200m.
Thaddeus Anim Somuah scored two superb
victories in the 200 and 400, brother Simon making a solid debut
in the 1500m. Greg Williams contested the high hurdles,
steeplechase and 400m hurdles winning the B string in the latter.
Steve Clague finished second in the 400m hurdles and steeplechase,
while Jamie White ran both middle distance races. Matt Crehan
ran the 800m as a warm up for the 5000 in which he was joined by veteran
Barry Graney.
Adam Brunt showed he can compete at this
level over 400m while Tom Green clocked the same time as the
winner in the 100m and was unlucky to suffer an injury when pounding
towards victory in the 200m. Michael Hughes and Mike Jackson
both took second place in the hammer (Mike arriving after finishing his
shift at 3.30.am!!). Nathan Orr showed why he is an automatic
place for the discus and also threw the javelin.
Last but certainly not least Phil Robinson
managed to compete in four events at the same time (pole vault, triple
jump, javelin and high jump, finishing second in the pole vault).
Hopefully we can provide additional support for Phil next year so the
burden can be spread more evenly between athletes. We were unlucky
inasmuch as Gary Ireland and Taylor
Caton-Hand were on holiday.
The organizers have accepted the change of date to
August was not in the best interests of the sport and, hopefully, next
year it will returning to the traditional September date.
The final scores were: (1) Bolton United
Harriers 368; (2) Leigh Harriers 345; (3) St Helens-Sutton 316;
(4) West Cheshire 255; (5) City of York 224.
This season was remarkable inasmuch as the
club beat our nemesis West Cheshire for the first time and made it two
wins with today’s result. Next season our aim must be to win division
two and take part in the promotion match again.
Our officials today were Dave Morley (track),
Pam Appleton (timekeeper), Colin Spark, John Irwin, George Mullineux and
Helena McGoldrick (field) while Phil Thomas waved the flags
during the relays (and needed ten minutes recovery time). Sue Clague
once again proved what an outstanding team manager she is with excellent
powers of persuasion. Many thanks to all the parents and grandparents
who came to support, especially Jim Crehan. Thanks too to
friends and supporters who added to the vocal support given to the team
as a whole. Apologies to anyone who has been omitted.

Sale Sizzler and Northern 5k
championship – Wythenshawe Park – 13th August.
MANCHESTER HOSTS THE
BIGGEST GATHERING OF EX-OLYMPIANS OUTSIDE LONDON
On Thursday, 16th
August, running legends spanning the last fifty years and ten Olympic Games
will participate in Wythenshawe Park’s popular 5k run for every ability.
Ex-Olympians Ron Hill, Geoff Norman, Michelle Scutt, Susan Crehan,
Diane Modahl and Ann Griffith who competed in the Olympic Games from
Tokyo 1964 to
Sydney 2000 will be ensuring the Olympic legacy lives on when they compete
alongside hundreds of others in the final Ronhill Sale Sizzler 5km series.
More recent Olympians
including David Grindley, Helen Clitheroe, Sarah Storey, Ben Storey, Audley
Harrison and Ben Whittle are also hoping to toe the line and make what could
be the largest Olympic reunion outside London 2012.
The run will also
incorporate the Northern 5k championships bringing together the North of
England’s fastest men and women.
This year’s series of
runs have been the most popular yet with over 500 locals of all abilities
taking part. And organiser, Sale Harriers is hoping that the final event
will see the largest number of participants complete the three mile, flat
course in Wythenshawe Park.
Established in 2002 after
the Manchester Commonwealth Games, the four 5k runs for every ability,
famously known as the Sale Sizzler series was established with the aim of
encouraging the people of Manchester to get fit and be healthier.
Race Organiser Fechin
McCormick of Sales Harriers comments: “We’re in the middle of the greatest
sporting event on earth with much success for many GB athletes. It’s through
events like the Sale Sizzlers that we can ensure the legacy of the London
2012 Olympics lives on and people of all abilities have the opportunity to
get fit and be involved in sport.
“With the support of some
of our greatest former Olympians I hope that the people of Manchester are
inspired to take part in the final Ronhill Sale 5k Sizzler event and make it
the best yet. Anybody of any ability can take part and I would encourage
everyone to come along.”
This year participants
have been asked to donate money to the
Diane Modahl Sports
Foundation,
which aims to bring high quality coaching opportunities to young people,
particularly those living in disadvantaged areas.
The final 5km run takes
place on Thursday, 16th August starting at the athletic track at
Wythenshawe Park at 7.30pm. For further information and to obtain an entry
