Sportshall County Squad

We are extremely pleased to announce that 11 athletes have been selected to represent Merseyside in the NW Sportshall County Finals on 25th February.

 Congratulations and well done to:

 Under 13’s

James Tennant,  Finlay Radcliffe,  David Barrow,  Hannah Seabrook,  Caitlin Young,  Megan Park

 Under15’s

Joshua Neal,  Bethany Baxter,  Jennifer Lea Worth,  Lauren Wilcock,  Megan Cunliffe

Their selection reflects the strength of our Sportshall teams over the last couple of years and we look forward to even more success next year as we have some great Under 11’s coming through.

Northern Cross Country Championships - Pontefract Racecourse, Pontefract, Saturday 28th January.

On Saturday 28th January, seven young athletes travelled to Pontefract racecourse for the Northern Cross Country. A great day for running with sun and little wind and a good fast course with hardly any mud.

First running for us were the Under 13 Girls- running a 3.1k course. Alex Bottomley led the team home in 90th place. Shortly followed by Abbie Roberts in 154th place. Bringing the team home with a gutsy run, Ellie Mawdsley finished in 170th place. All three girls gained experience by running in a high class opposition. Well Done Girls!

Our only Under 13 Boy, Adam Woosey covered the 3.1k course in 38th place. Adam gained experience for next year. Well Done Adam!

In the Under 15 Girls we had Rachel lead the team home in 104th place, followed by Shannon in 119th, and Maria bringing the team home in 131st place. Once again Shannon gained experience in her first Northern Cross Country, as Rachel and Maria gain experience for next year. Well Done Girls!

Team Manager: Helena McGoldrick.

Gemma Connolly (34:29, 33rd)  was the sole runner for the Senior Women, she produced a fast finish with enough in the tank for another lap.

Jamie White (33:24, 69) was the only runner for the Junior Men.

Six Senior Men made the trip, first home was Barry Graney (51:23, 318) just doing enough to stay ahead of the duelling Robbie Marsh (52:11, 351) and Peter Johnson (52:20, 359) who played cat and mouse for the three laps before Robbie made a decisive break up the last hill.  Maurice Collins (55:23, 450) was next home ahead of Steve Clague (56:12, 470). The team was completed by Andrew O'Connor (57:36, 517) enjoying his cross country comeback placing us 42nd team.  Big thanks to Sue Clague who managed to appear at various points round the course and gave welcome support (So that's why she's been training hard recently!). Ian Pass was delayed by public transport and missed the start .

Four Villages Half Marathon - Helsby, Sunday 22 January

Gemma Connolly won the Helsby Half Marathon in a time of 81.05 (chip time 81.03), a great booster for her marathon debut later in the year.

This tough, hilly course was given added difficulty with 25 mph winds impeding progress and disrupting any chance of hitting a steady rhythm .  Ian Pass 1:27:36 (30th V40, 134) continued his form from last year with a solid run well within himself, Barry Graney 1:29:25 (39th V40, 178) also had a steady run with Pete Johnson clocking exactly the same chip time.  Maurice Collins 1:32:49 (54th V55, 275) held on well after an early bad patch and Chris Levy 1:35:39 (141st M, 353)  was just pleased to be there after having done little running since his new arrival landed.

As well as Gemma's superb performance a further trio of ladies competed;  Lousie Hogg 1:46:16 (23rd V35, 772) had a fantastic run only six months after having a baby and this was great training for her upcoming IronMan,  Sharon Nunn 1:50:40 (28th V45, 932) made light work of the conditions knocking 10 minutes off her pb, and Rosie O'Hagan 1:50:58 (14th V50, 941) completed the trio.

Ian Costello
was also seen out and about around the course offering support, taking photos and sprinting past the club's runners in the last 800m for fun.

Gemma Connolly (4th & 4th SW- 31:29) led the Senior Women home with a great 4th place continuing her fine form from last week's county championship. Julia Eccleston (49th & 15th L35- 37:12) was next home clear of  Chris Dempsey (107th & 9th L50- 42:43) and Pam Appleton (116th & 6th L55- 44:02) with Pauline Picton (135th & 8th L55- 54:46)completing the team which finished in 15th overall  and 18th Vet team.

Rob Marsh (112th & 23th V40- 40:42)
brought  home a slightly depleted, vets only squad for the Senior Men.  He did well to hold off  Peter Johnson (115th & 24th V40- 40:52)  seconds behind.  The final four of Ian White (151th & 27th V45- 42:49), Andrew O'Connor (155th & 12th V50- 42:57),  Alan McNally (157th & 28th V45- 43:04)
and Mark Liptrot (163th & 14th V50- 43:11) all finished within 22 seconds of each other which ensured a competitive race.  The team finished 23rd overall and 18th Vet team.

Northern Indoor Championships - Sheffield 14/15 January.

Thaddeus Anim-Somuah stepped up to the 400m recording 51.05 in the first round and 50.78 in the semi final. As far as we know these are the two fastest indoor 400s run by a St.Helens-Sutton club member and just over one second outside Ian Crompton's outdoor record. Well done Thaddeus. Michael Causer set a new club best in the U20 long jump recording 6.68(4) while Taylor Caton-Hand finished fifth in the triple jump with 11.46. Results:

Parents and Volunteers

We are always on the lookout for people who would like to get more involved in helping out at the club.  In particular for parents of children at the club we'd love you to help out in some way.  Even a small commitment, like helping at the recent Sporthall Decathlon, covering the desk for a short time,  marshalling a race for an hour helps the club run more smoothly - many hands make light work!

In time if you do develop an interest in coaching the club can help you to gain formal coaching qualifications.

Make a special effort this Olympic year to get more involved, talk to your (child's) coach or a member of the committee if you want to know more about how you could help us.

Make this year the year you get more involved in sport.     Volunteer Benefits
