National Junior League - Wigan 29 April Although exams and the affect-effects of Alex Helsby's birthday party deterred one or two members from attending the opening National Junior League match, the small number of athletes who did attend produced three club records and an Athlete of the Match performance. Dave Forrester took almost a minute off Tom Griffiths' previous U20 3000 record by lapping all bar one other competitor in 8.45.1 and earned the Athlete of the Match medallion. Josie Barrow warmed up with a long jump and then raised the U17 and Under 20 high jump records to 1.55 in an excellent start to her season. Jake Healey and Jessica Cretu produced season's bests in the 800 and 1500 (Jake), discus, long jump and triple jump (Jessica) while John Appleton had a splendid afternoon competing in the 400m hurdles, 2k Steeplechase and 3000m. Gemma Connolly retained her Croxteth Park 10k title with ease recording 39.10. Julia Eccleston was fifth 44.50, Karen Jarvis 45.46 (eighth), Chris Dickinson 47.01 (12th), Eleanor Reynolds (22nd) 49.49 and Dorothy Fairhurst 56.59 finished 49th. Karen and Christine were first and second over 45's while Dorothy was the first over 65 to finish. On the men's side newcomer Chris Reid 44.41(76), Tommy Dunning 46.24 (93) and Julian Corfe 53.38 (168) all collected Grand Prix points. The timing was brilliantly handled by Janet Holmes and Pam Appleton .
Hawkshead Trail Race:Lake District 28 April Barry Graney and Ian Pass ran the Hawkshead trail race which incorporated three long climbs including a sting in the tail climbing away from Lake Windermere over the Coffin Trail. Fantastic scenery, good weather and lots of atmosphere and activities at the finish. Out of the 512 runners Barry was 29th in 71.20 and Ian 83rd in 80.08. Report from Barry Graney Results National Sports Hall Final - Birmingham 21st April Congratulations to Sophie Rigby who won the National Sports Hall Under 13 high jump final with a personal best leap of 1.50m. London Marathon Weekend April 22nd We don't have full details as yet but we do know that Gill Laithwaite was 19th (3rd over 35) in 2.48.32 and David Forrester was second in the under 17 mini-marathon in 12.47. Other results include Tony Smith 2.51.56; Ian "I got cramp" Hayburn, 3.09.04, Billy Mousdale 3.20.08, Julian Corfe 3.30.22, Mark Glynn 3.38.20 and Sue O'Hanlon Sue O’Hanlon 4.18. Elsewhere Julia Eccleston finished 58th (6th lady overall and third in the senior lady category)at the Garstang Gallop 10K recording 47.24 Rob Stiffin ran the Lochaber Marathon in Fort William on Sunday in 4:28 which was a 22 minute PB. He's so enchanted by the scenery he was last heard singing The far Cuillins are pullin' me away, Sure by Tummel and Loch Rannoch and Lochaber I will go Hopefully the joys of the St Helens dip mist will draw him back home. We have just received information that Zoe Woods and Dorothy Fairhurst finished 17th and 18th in the first Wirral Seaside race held on 25 March. Cheshire League - Stockport April 22nd The club opened its Cheshire League account with a double header at Stockport finishing fifth overall in a day punctuated by showers. Mike Hughes represented the senior men with a 21.61m javelin throw, the under 13 girls' relay team of Tricia Spark, Danni McGifford, Chelsea Jarvis and Liane Bibby were first with the B team of Lucy Renshall, Louise Hayes, Becky O'Brien and Catherine Mousdale also winning. Tom Green continued his excellent season with victory in the 200, Danny Hughes threw the discus 19.31.m while the under 15 girls' trio of Heather Drillingcourt, Emily Dickinson and Jenny Lamb were joined by Danny to take second place in the relay. The under 11 boys' threesome of Daniel Elston, Shawn Davies and Jonathan Causer were joined by Jenny Lamb for their relay while Amy Ellis, Olivia Tuck, Katie McGifford and Ellie Desmond pulled off a stunning victory in the under 11 contest. Julia Hayes acted as team manager while Carl Bibby, John Irwin, Colin Sparks, Andy Drillingcourt and Mike Hughes acted as officials. Information from Julia Hayes. Results (Club) Results (meeting) Blackpool - Mid Lancs League - April 21st Heather Drillingcourt, competing as a guest, lowered the club's under 15 girls 300m record to a splendid 44.0 seconds at Blackpool's Stanley Park. Open Meeting - Wigan - April 15th. Full results will be posted from this event as soon as we have them and, with apologies from Andy Drillingcourt to anyone not mentioned, this is what he was able to remember. In the U17's Adam Fackey recorded a pb 4.40.5 in the 1500m, while in the U15's Tom Green competed for the second time in two days in the 100 and 200 and Danny Hughes contested the 200, 800 and putt the shot 9.31m. The U11 boys trio of Sean Davies, Daniel Elston and Jonathan Causer competed in the long jump, 75m and 600m with pb's all round. There were seven U15 girls Sam Fraser 9.55 Shot, 1. 57 High Jump, 12.2secs 75m hurdles, Sophie Rigby 1.45 and Heather Drillingcourt 200 and 800 (2.33.09). Natasha Le Surf contested the 100 and 200 while Jenny Lamb, Emily Talau and Joanna Pennington made their track debuts competing in the 100m, long jump , Shot Putt and 800. Joanna examined the track very closely and returned with cuts, bruises and grazes to knees, elbows and shoulder but even more determined to race. In the U13's Becky O'Brien 800 ( 3m.13.06), 100 (16.2), and Vicky Lamb 1200 (5 mins) also made fine track debuts, Chelsea Jarvis won the 1200 in 4m.06. and competed in the long jump and 100. Louise Hayes competed in the 1200 (time not confirmed) and long Jump. Lucy Renshall ran 2.58.8 for the 800, competed in the long jump and 100 with Tricia Spark winning the shot putt with 7.84m, running the 200 (31.5) and 100, Danielle McGifford won the 75m hurdles and long jumped. Six U11's competed Chloe Rigby, Alisha Cain, Elle Desmond, Amy Ellis, Rosie Johnson and Katie McGifford in the 600, 75 and long jump. Well done to all the athletes, thanks to all coaches and parents for their support. Report and Information from Andy Drillingcourt and Colin Sparks 10k Roman Road Race at Ribchester - April 15th In warm and sunny conditions Dennis Wharton finished 12th (2nd over 50) in a time of 39.14. The positions of Julius Caesar and Mark Anthony have not yet been confirmed but will be as soon as the information is received. Melbourne Meeting at Wavertree - April 14th Phil Robinson came within 10cms of equalling Peter Code's club pole vault record with 3.30m at Wavertree. Thaddeus Anim-Somuah won the 200m in 22.9 and was second in the 100 in 11.5 while Tom Green did the reverse by winning the 100 in 12.4 and coming second in the 200 in 25 secs. John Ashcroft was second in the high jump with 1.40, finishing fifth in the 800 in 2.24.5 while Heather Drillingcourt was second in the 200 (27.8) and third in the 100 (14 secs). Kathryn Wilson contested the 1500 recording 4.43.9 and finishing fifteenth. Report by Andy Drillingcourt Trafford Open Meeting - April 9th. After a hard winter's training St. Helens Sutton AC's athletes hit the track running with 19 medals from 16 athletes and a whole host of personal bests. After the glorious weather of the previous three days it was back to damp and gloomy conditions but the athletes were not deterred. Jamie White started the day by winning thee 3000m, while Elle Desmond, Shawn Davis and Daniel Elston made promising track debuts, Daniel gaining a bronze medal (600m). Amy Ellis gained experience in the sprints with a pb in the 75m while Chloe Rigby won gold in the 75m, 150m, and long jump ( pb), making it 6 medals in a week. The under 13 girls' quartet of Liane Bibby, Tricia Spark, Lucy Renshall and Chelsea Jarvis gained nine medals between them. Liane won bronze in the Javelin, silver 150m, and a gold over 75m, while Tricia gained silver shot and gold discus with pb's in all her three events. Lucy and Chelsea stepped up to under 13s with ease, Chelsea gaining two silvers,1000m and 75m and a bronze in the long jump and Lucy a silver in her debut 70m hurdle race after saying "I wouldn't mind a go at that '" at the end of training on Thursday!!!! Daniel Hughes and Tom Green were the other under 15 boys to compete Daniel gaining bronze and silver for the 200m and 800m while Tom won silvers in the 100m and 200m. A trio of under 15 girls competed gaining a couple of medals. Sophie Rigby gold in the high jump and Heather Drillingcourt with a pb in the 800m gaining a bronze with support from Emily Dickinson 100m and shot. There was only one senior athlete Mike Hughes who gave a good performance in the shot (despite the lack of warm up) and plenty of valuable and vocal support from parents and grandparents. Joe Williams also competed but was bustled out of his race and did not finish. Joe's currently attending self-defence classes in preparation for his next competition!! The club won a bakers' dozen of medals at the Rivington Pike Fell Race, incorporating the Merseyside Fell Race Championships. The girls' trio of Karen Jarvis, Louise Hogg and Chris Dickinson retained the team title they won last year and while Louise's individual title went to Sam Dean-Howard (SouthportWaterloo), Karen collected an individual silver and Louise the bronze. The senior men's team of Greg Williams, Barry Graney and John Appleton relieved SouthportWaterloo of the men's team title, defeating Wirral by three points, Greg claiming third place in the county contest and John winning the Junior Men's award in the Pike race itself. The trio also collected an unexpected second place in the Pike race making thirteen medals in all. As a result of today's race Karen and Louise have been selected to represent Merseyside at the Inter-Counties Fell Race in May. Report from a delighted Phil Thomas Results Also on the Fells Sarah Charnock competed in the Pendle Hill Race finishing seventh lady overall in 43.22 as part of her bid to be selected for Cheshire at the Inter-Counties event. Dennis Wharton continued his tough race schedule running in the second of the tour of Fylde races, with the Good Friday 4 mile beach run. Gemma Connolly acted as our reporter for Easter Sunday's Halton Bridge race running a fast time to ensure she collected the results as well as her winner's prize and award for first local lady to finish. The equivalent local in the men's race was Ian Costello who was last seen in his local. The men's trio of Russell Barron, Ian Costello and Rob Marsh took the team prize and there were vets prizes for Tracy Gill, Pam Appleton and Dorothy Fairhurst. Julian Corfe ran 30.26 and his result with all the others will be added as soon as they are available. The others included Jo Clisham Marsh who was seventh lady, Rosie O'Hagan and Chris Reid. Report from Gemma Connolly : Results Tour of Fylde Race 1 Blackpool. 5 April 2007 Dennis Wharton made it three out of five competing in the first leg of the tour, a six mile course along the prom. only found out about on Thursday night, with excellent results all round.
Ian Costello ran in the senior men's 3000m finishing second in
9:56.4 while the U15 girls were represented by Sophie Rigby who won
the high jump with a pb of 1.48m and took second in the 100m
sprint recording a time of 13.7 seconds. SouthportWaterloo A C April Fools Races. 1 April These races, usually held on Good Friday, were badly affected by the enforced decision to move them but provided a good test for a number of the club's athletes. Club captain, Julia Eccleston, was ninth (sixth non-vet) in 27.46. Membership Secretary, Pam Appleton, had her best run for some time with 31.21 to finish sixth O50. Eleanor Reynolds made her debut for the club, finishing sixteenth U35, in 33.22, Dorothy Fairhurst was the first O65 with 35.14 and Pauline Picton was 13th 050 in 37.01. Dennis Wharton led the men home in the 4 mile race finishing 4th Vet in 25.10, supported by Roy Griffin 24th U40 in 26.51. In the Fun Run Louise Hayes was 11th girl (13.38), Courtney Dodson 18th (15.19) while Mark Eccleston took 47th place in the Boys' run with 15.41. In addition Owen and Gerry Kennedy completed the course in 14.11. Results:
Also on April 1st Russell Barron competed in the Friskney Half
Marathon in Lincolnshire, finishing a creditable fourth in 78.57.
