North West Sports Hall League - Wigan - 28 October

The club made significant progress in the second round of the Sports Hall League with the under 11 and under 13 girls now in the top six, the Under 11 boys only 14 points short of a place in the finals and the under 15 beating several clubs to finish within 31 points of a place in the final six.

The turn out was magnificent with eleven U11 girls and thirteen U11 Boys, the former finishing second to Halton but moving ahead of Liverpool and West Cheshire into third place overall. Shelby Jack marked her debut with a win in the SLJ (1.76), Bethany Baxter (55.1) and Elisha Cain (5.75) were victorious in the 4 Lap and Chest Push respectively, Rachel Woosey contesting the A string in the former (54.2) and the SLJ (1.78). Chloe Rigby collected third places in the 2 Lap (26.4) and STJ (5.70) while Ellie Shacklady and Katie McGifford each scored 46 in the Speed Bounce. Others contesting the events were Amy Ellis, Lauren Wilcock, Ellie Desmond and Danielle Webb all of whom are giving selector Colin Spark food for thought.

There is equally keen competition amongst the U11 Boys' squad. Daniel Elston was equal first in the Speed Bounce (47), Kieran Layland claimed B string wins in the 4 Lap (54.8) and Chest Push (5.25).  Ben Walsh was  second in the Chest Push (5.25), Owen Kennedy third in the SLJ (1.79) in which Keiron Garrity earned third place in the B string (1.67).  Also in the placings were Adam Woosey (SB 45), Ryan Houghton (4 Lap - 54), Scott Houghton (VJ -26) and Ben Hayburn with 25 in the same event. Others who contributed to an excellent afternooon's team performance included  Jamie Dinnarr, Callum Baxter, Owen Stout and Ryan Derbyshire.

The Nine Strong U13 Girls dislodged Liverpool from a top six place with a Speed Bounce double from Louise Hayes (87) and Sophie Cummins (78). Tricia Spark and Liane Bibby were equally successful in the shot putt (9.44 & 7.43). Danielle McGifford was second in the STJ (6.13), Lucy Renshall second in the SLJ (1.82), Amanda Paton (1.97) taking fourth in the A string. Lauren Pike (1.76) pressed her claim for a place as did Sally Shacklady (SB - 75).

For the trio of U15 Girls Sophie Rigby won the SLJ (2.24) and took equal second in the Speed Bounce (87), Heather Drillingcourt (86) winning the B string. Joanna Bebington turned her hand to everything she could finishing fourth in the 6 Lap with 1.28.9.

Our single U13 boy (Chris Garrity) did well scoring 32.5 points with 2 Lap (26.1), VJ (34) and 6 Lap (1.31.5). If we can get three others out with Chris next time a top six place is still within our grasp.

Full scores are available on the Sports Hall website and have been placed on the club noticeboard. The selectors were Colin Sparks & Andy Drillingcourt Under 11's, Carl Bibby Under 13/15's with Julia Hayes as team manager. Our officials included Ste Houghton, Paul Shacklady, and Mrs Woosey. All turned up at training having had their ears tested!!!!

Team Placings: U11 Girls   271 (3); U11 Boys 241.5 (7), U13 Girls 250 (6), U13 Boys (32.5 (8) and U15 Girls 208.5(8). Next Match - 18 November - Venue - Wigan.

Original Mountain Marathon - Dumfries - 27/28 October

Barry Graney and Ray Vose maintained their record of not finishing this event for the third successive year. In fact they went one better than last year and didn't even make the camp at the end of the first day!! We shouldn't be too critical, however, it was foggy and, although I managed to find the full results on Sportident, I was soon just as lost as they were and couldn't make head nor tail of them. Apparently Ian Pass made it to the finish but, having missed several check points, was not counted in the overall category although he must be in the results there somewhere. (Can anyone help??) There was also an Ian Yoxall but whether he's the guy who comes to the club is unknown as, amongst those who did finish the course, was a Jamie Webb and I'm sure he ran at Heaton Park on Saturday. Give the guys a break I got tired just looking at the equipment they had to carry!! I was thinking of having a go next year but as I can't read a map, understand a compass, put up a tent - still less sleep in one - I'll stick to writing reports. Report From Phil Thomas

Weekend Miscellaneous:

Sue O'Hanlon ran the Snowden Marathon (26.2 miles and uphill) on 27 October finishing 651 (93rd female 12th 045) in a time of 4.18.53 and another 98 seconds to eat her chips at the finish. What do you mean that's not what chip time means? Meanwhile, Jill Colbert turned out on Sunday in the Holmfirth 15 on Sunday 28 October, finishing 18th female (5th O35) in 2.03.38 - apparently there were no chips - typical Yorkshire!!!!

Manchester Area Cross Country League - Heaton Park - 27 October

Two dozen athletes turned out at the first Manchester Area match.  Jemma Shaw was second in the U15 Girls' race, Chelsea Jarvis third in the U13 girls' contest,  Sarah Charnock took third in the senior ladies' race, Karen Jarvis was third 045 to finish and John Ashcroft fourth U15. The U15 Boys' team  won their team race, the U15 and U13 Girls lie third and the senior ladies are fourth.

Sarah Charnock (3), Gemma Connolly (13), Julia Eccleston (28) and Karen Jarvis (30) were the counters for the ladies team with Chris Dickinson (55) and Chris Dempsey (84) providing support. In the senior men's race Ian White finished a solitary 89th.

The U15 quartet of John Ashcroft (4), Jamie White (7), David T Griffiths (9) and Danny Hughes (12) not only won the team race finished within 36 seconds of each other with Jamie Webb (back from the Isle of Man) 16th.

The girls too put in a solid performance, Jemma's sprint finish earning second, Lauren Bradshaw (9), Heather Drillingcourt (13) and Natalie Garrity (15) packing well for third while Joanna Bebbington (40) and Jenny Lamb (41) made their debut, running together as experience for the next match.

Chelsea's third place was supplemented by Rachel Wilcock (12), debutant Vicky Lamb (21) and Louise Hayes (27) to claim third spot. Steve Clague (19) and Adam Fackey (20) ran steadily in their opening run of the season.

Heaton Park is always a tough course and the next one at Boggart Hole Clough in Middleton is a cinch by comparison so we can anticipate an even bigger turn out (especially as the under 11's will be competing) and build on this excellent start to the season. Results have been sent to those athletes who are on email, are on the notice board and can be accessed via BBresults.com

National Young Athletes Road Relays - Sutton Coldfield 21 October

The club fielded teams in the under 15 Boys and Girls races at the Young Athletes Road Relays, using the opportunity to gain experience and provide different opportunities on stage running. Lauren Bradshaw (16.44) led the girls' team out finishing 55th, Jemma Shaw (15.55) picked up 12 places on the second stage and Heather Drillingcourt ran the final leg (16.29) finishing 38th. Danny Hughes (14.36) ran first leg for the U15 Boys finishing 46th. Jamie Webb (14.41) picked up two places while John Ashcroft (13.46) showed great adaptability and completed the final lap in 33rd position. Adrian Webb acted as team manager for the first time today, Lyn Webb and Andy Drillingcourt also attended along with several parents while Danielle Webb ran the course several times in support of the athletes. Information and Reports from Adrian Webb and Andy Drillingcourt.

National Road Relay - Sutton Coldfield 20 October

The club set a marker for next season by taking 74th place in its first appearance in the National Road Relays since Sutton Harriers competed in the 12 stage road relay in 1969. Although not at full strength there was a great boost when Dave Forrester finished seventeenth on lap one. Ian Costello and Barry Graney continued their personal battle with Barry on fourth leg recording 20.46, against Ian's 20.51. In between there was a splendid debut from Tuhid Wahid (21.33) with Ray Vose (23.04) and Peter Johnson (23.00) completing the count with an overall time of 2.06.55. With a full strength team in 2008 and an active recruitment policy it provides the target to be beaten next year.

Northern Selection:

David Forrester has been invited to represent Northern Athletics at the Tilburg Waranderloop International Cross Country on 10/11 November. Of course it means he'll have to miss the Liverpool & District match at Beacon Park, Upholland but reaching international level means sacrifices have to be made!! That doesn't mean to say the rest of the seniors can have a day off though. Many congratulations to Dave and to his coach Ray Vose.

Sandstone Trail Race - Cheshire - 14 October

Barry Graney finished thirteenth in 2.08.14 in the A race while Lawrence Walker was second in the B race in 1.09.43. Barry assures me that the A race was longer than the B race. Course it was Barry!!!!

Gin Pit 5 Trail Race - Tyldsley - 14 October

Ian Hayburn (33rd in 31.25), Julia Eccleston (5th in 36.08) and Chris Dempsey (5th over 45 in 42.03) represented the club at this very enjoyable event held over pathways near Leigh.

North West Sports Hall League - Kingsway - Widnes 7 October

There was a very encouraging turn out in the first match of the North West Sports Hall League at Widnes. In the under 11 girls' events, Chloe Rigby (27.9) and Alisa Cain (29.0) were second and third in the two lap event, Beverley Baxter's 60.8 earned her joint first place over four laps with Ellie Desmond (73.2) fifth. Rachel Woosey (54) and Sally Ashton (53) were well placed in the speed bounce and closely followed by Sally Ashton (52). Amy Ellis recorded 38 in the vertical jump for third place. Chloe Rigby's 2.02 in winning the standing long jump was supplemented by Rosie Johnson's 1.68 in fourth place. Danielle Webb made her debut with  70.5 over 4 laps. The team were third just eight points behind the winners on the day.

There was a much higher turn out of under 11 boys than last season, Daniel Elson (61.6) and Owen Kennedy (68.8) were each third in the four lap race, Callum Baxter (29.0) and Ben Walsh (33) taking fourth in the 2 Lap event. Jonathan Causer earned fifth place in the standing triple jump with 4.26. The team were fourth on the day.

In the under 13 girls' Laine Bibby (7.46) and Tricia Spark (9.24) scored a double first in the shot putt, Lucy  Renshall (43) and Sally Shacklady (36) each taking fourth in the vertical jump combined for fourth place while Joanna Bebbington (70) and Sophie Rigby (86) each claimed second place in the speed bounce. Sophie (47) teamed up with Emily Talau (39) for two second places in the vertical jump while Sam Fraser took the shot putt with 9.68 earning the team joint third.

In the overall table the under 11 Girls lie fifth with 144.5 pts, the under 11 Boys seventh with 123.5  while the under 13 Boys with 125 pts and the under 13 girls who have scored 129 are also seventh. The under 15 girls are eighth with 117. The top six in each age group go through to the Regional final so all teams are still in with a chance if we have a good turn out in future matches.

Team Managers Carl Bibby and Colin Spark, who had an auspicious start to their season, provided the information. Full results can be found on the Sports Hall website. Results.

Northern Young Athletes Road Relays - Croxteth Park - Liverpool 7 October

There were some excellent individual and team performances at today's Northern Young Athletes Road Relays with the under 15 Boys' trio coming fifth and top ten placings by John Ashcroft (5th fastest) and Chelsea Jarvis (seventh).

John's 10.40 set the standard for David T Griffiths (11.00) and Jamie White (11.03) as the club produced its best ever Under 15 performance by finishing fifth, even raising hopes of a medal by moving into third after lap two.To reinforce the club's strength in depth Danny Hughes (11.26), Jamie Webb (12.45) and Joe Williams (13.31) took twentieth place - and we still have Tom Prescott to come.

Chelsea produced a splendid run on lap two, recording the fastest lap time (12.09) and pulling the team up to ninth place. Rachel Wilcock ran 13.23 on lap one and Louise Hayes (14.13)  brought the team home in seventhteen place on the final circuit.

There wasn't much to separate the Under 17's as Jake Healy (12.38), Steve Clague (12.35) and Adam Fackey (13.06) finished eighteenth. The Under 15 girls' too were close together with Heather Drillingcourt (13.16), Jemma Shaw (12.51) and Lauren Bradshaw (13.01) combining for 23rd place overall. Results
