Sports Hall League - Ellesmere Port 28 January. Initial results from the Sports Hall League indicate the under 11 Girls
won with 123 points beating Liverpool, West Cheshire and Southport which
should be sufficient to reach the final. Luke McDonald and Danny Hughes
beat Southport in the under 11 and under 15 age groups while
Heather Drillingcourt's 39 points was enough to get the better
of Prestatyn in the under 15 girls. Congratulations to everyone
especially Jessica Southward who showed great pluck to finish well
in her race after falling early on.
Northern Cross Country Championships - Heaton Park, Manchester 27 January. Dave Forrester became the club's first Northern Cross Country champion when he sprinted to victory in the 2007 event at Heaton Park, Manchester. It was the first Northern cross country title for Sutton since Fred McMinnis won the Northern senior event at Sherdley Park in 1948. Dave will now try to earn a place in the UK to compete in the World junior Cross Country Championships in Mombassa in March by competing in the Under 20 age group at the Inter-Counties in February. It's either Mombassa or competing in the English Schools' at Leeds on the same day. Tough decision that!!!! The club top and tailed the under 17 race, John Dumbell (126), Ben Clough (169) and Steve Clague (170) providing support to ensure we finished a team in the top twenty. The senior ladies finished a team in the top ten, led by Gill Laithwaite in 13th position and with good support from Sarah Charnock (62), Gemma Connolly (79) and Julia Eccleston (137), grabbed tenth spot one place behind Liverpool and well ahead of county champions SouthportWaterloo. Chris Dempsey (189), Karen Jarvis (197) and Chris Dickinson (240) made sure the internal club competition continued in intensity and although Gill is missing for the National Louise Hogg will be taking part. The senior men were 37th, Greg Williams (135), Barry Graney (214), Ian White (327), Pete Johnson (330), Ian Pass (483) and Julian Corfe (472) making up for last year's failure to complete a team. The under 15 foursome of Adam Fackey (120), John Ashcroft (136), Danny Hughes (142) and David Griffiths (182), who picked up an injury, took 21st position. The under 15 trio of Jemma Shaw (70), Heather Drillingcourt (105) and Lauren Bradshaw (125) ran to form as did the under 13 boys' threesome of Jamie White (41), Jamie Webb (68) and the improving Andrew Cowley (74) all of whom are looking forward to competing in next week's schools' races. Rachel Wilcock (140) put in a strong performance to lead the club's under 13 girls home supported by Louise Hayes (155) and Kathryn Wilson (170). In the Under 20's men's race John Appleton took seventieth place as he gets used to the less regulated student hours and over-riding self-discipline that characterises University life. Congratulations to everyone who took part.
Helsby Half Marathon : 21 January The ladies team of Gill Laithwaite (2), Gemma
Connolly (8) and Sarah Charnock (34) won the team prize at the Helsby
Half Marathon with a cumulative time of 4.19.56. Had the men's team
prize been awarded on points the club would have scored a double. However,
although Matt Cullen (13), Tony Smith (16), Greg Williams (29) and
Marc Laithwaite (43) scored 101 points, 28 better than team winners
Salford, the latter had a cumulative time of 4.53.56 against our own
5.06.36. The men's team included Ian Hayburn (900, Matt Shillabeer (110), Rob Marsh (137), Paul Burgess (247), Dennis Wharton (255) , Julian Corfe (376), Gerry Kennedy (791) and Rob Stiffin (833). If anyone has been missed out please let me know. That's an excellent result for the first race in the Grand Prix series which
has been instituted this season, the points for which are being calculated by
Julia and Ian. Full results have been emailed to all those who took part - and
have an email - and will appear on the Helsby website shortly.
Northern U20/U17/U15 Indoor Championships - Sheffield 20/21 January Thaddeus Anim-Somuah recorded 7.39 for the 60m in the heats of the Under 20 competition. The results of the semifinals haven't been published yet. The time was only 0.04 of a second outside Craig Knight's Under 20 record. Craig is expected to return to competition next month having moved up to senior level. Thaddeus was back for day 2 recording 23.52 over the 200m. Also on day two Sam Fraser set a personal best 1.61m to win the silver medal in the Under 15 high jump, was fourth in the shot putt with 9.88 and fifth in the 60m hurdles with 9.96 (9.73 in the heats) the latter the new club record for the distance. AAA Indoor Heptathlon - Sheffield 13/14 January Phil Robinson broke three club records taking 21st in the AAA's Indoor Heptathlon. Whereas last year Phil entered the Northern but not the AAA's, this year he did the opposite and was rewarded with new club best in the 60m Hurdles (11.16), 1000m (3.04.33) and overall points total of 3095 an improvement of over 200 points over last season. In addition, Phil recorded 8.09 (60m), 5.00 (long Jump), 10.08 (shot putt), 1.54 (high jump) and 2.75 (pole vault). Senior Men Results . JunMen . SeniorWomen . JunWomen Manchester Area Cross Country League: 13 January The club's athletes battled in the cold on a hard and sapping surface to maintain their interest in the medals in the Manchester League's penultimate match held at Wythenshaw Park. Gemma Connolly (9th 27.12) and Sarah Charnock (14th 27.25) both performed well enough to be in contention for the 15 woman Cheshire squad for the inter-counties, although neither is likely to be in the nine who compete. Sarah still leads the aggregate contest in the League with one match left. Julia Eccleston ( 26th - 29.07) while the team was fifth on the day and is fourth on aggregate. Chris Dempsey lies third in the 0/45 category after finishing seventh (31.41) while Chris Dickinson was ninth over 40 (33.55). Louise Hogg was absent, having had her car stolen. David Griffiths was another absentee having missed school with an illness leaving Adam Fackey (16 - 16.11), John Ashcroft (20 - 16.32) and Danny Hughes (21 - 16.36) to represent the club, Danny lying sixth overall with one match to go. Jemma Shaw (7 - 13.56), Heather Drillingcourt (18 - 14.59), Lauren Bradshaw (19 - 15.19) and the reliable Elizabeth Mousdale (28 -19.47) ensured the under 15 girls were third on the day and on aggregate, Heather running 24 hours after visiting the dentist. Jemma and Heather are third and fourth on aggregate. Kathryn Rumsey led the under 13's home (16 -12.05) with support from Louise Hayes (23- 12.31) and Kathryn Wilson (28 -13.00). The girls are still in with an outside chance of a team medal. Jamie White is in the medals in the aggregate contest, finishing fourth in 12.48, with Jamie Webb showing his quality in 9th place (13.15). At the other end of the age scale Stan Erlam was the fifth over 65 to compete recording 46.13. Many thanks to all those who provided transport and to Julia Hayes who acted as team manager. The final match takes place at Stockport on Sunday 11 February with medal places still available for various age groups, including the under 11's where Chelsea Jarvis is the aggregate leader. Open Meeting - Sports City. 7 January
Samantha Fraser cleared 1.55 (high jump), putt the shot 9.22 and long jumped 4.51 at the Open Meeting at Sports City. Merseyside Cross Country Championships - Croxteth Park 6 January There was triumph and tragedy at the county event held on a very heavy course at Croxteth Park. It was triumph for Gill Laithwaite who retained her senior women's title with a comprehensive victory over Jenny Clague and tragedy for the under 15 girls' team who were initially given third place which was later awarded to SouthportWaterloo. With Julia Eccleston (10) returning to fitness, Chris Dempsey (17) returning from holiday and Louise Hogg (21) discovering that it's difficult to run on a muddy cross country course in trainers (a search party later found the lost shoes!) the girls repeated their bronze medal placing of twelve months ago, Chris Dickinson again providing backup, as Penny Lane were defeated by three points. The under 13 Boys' team of Jamie White (6), Jamie Webb (9), Andrew Cowley(13) and Andy Harvey (21) – with Joe Williams (24) in solid support – took third place while the fourth placed under 15 girls' team of Jemma Shaw (9), Heather Drillingcourt (20), Lauren Bradshaw (22) and Elizabeth Mousdale (27) battled hard in the strength sapping conditions. The under 13 girls also found it hard going, running as a team led by Kathryn Wilson (16), sprinter Sophie Rigby (18), Louise Hayes (19) and Rachel Wilcox (25) with Jennifer Lamb (26) and Jessica Southward (27) making their debuts over the country. The team were fourth scoring the same points as the under 13's. The under 15 Boys have all entered the Northern and National so today's fifth placing was a good opener for those later tests. David Griifhts (16), Adam Fackey (24), Danny Hughes (26) and John Ashcroft (29) are all more suited to more solid ground but pack well enough to make a big impact later in the season. They were fifth with 97points. John Appleton was disappointed with his ninth placing in the junior race while John Dumbell (14) and Steve Clague (19) contested the under 17 race. The senior men were always up against it in the absence of the in-form Greg Williams and their position worsened when Ian Hayburn pulled out because of the hospitalisation of his wife. Yet, despite these setbacks the club fielded two complete teams (Marc Laithwaite (10), Tony Smith (16), Russell Barron making his debut (21), Barry Graney (26), Rob Marsh (29) and Peter Johnson (42) coming within nine points of claiming the bronze medals from SouthportWaterloo. Further down the field the second six of Dennis Wharton (63), Ian White (66), Billy Mousdale (67), Julian Corfe (88), Stan Erlam (91) and Steve Tate (98) ensured we finished a B team, a major improvement on last year. The championships should have been held at Sherdley Park but the club lacked the personnel to set out the course which, in recent years, has fallen on John Irwin's shoulders. Members who want to see the championships on home turf are invited to volunteer their services now to save visiting another flat county course in 2008. Results pdf. Merseyside Results index Cheshire Cross Country Championships - Winsford - 6 January Gemma Connolly finished a splendid eleventh in the Cheshire Championships at Winsford recording 34.52 on a course not suited to her fleet-footed running style. In the men's race there was a return to competition for Ian Costello (44th in 51.36) following last year's heart scare, Matt Shillabeer (50th - 52.54) and Ian Pass (73rd – 57.28). Cheshire Results
