Trafford Grand Prix : 30 August

Eight club members decided to have a go at the final Grand Prix and came away with three new club records. Ben Fisher sett a new junior and senior record of 1.85 in the high jump. Ben also threw 49.10 in the javelin in which Phil Robinson threw 40.40 before removing Kenny Williams' 11 year old discus record with 34.42.. Dave Twigg (2.00.74) and Greg Williams (2.02.42) competed in the 800, Steve Mayers (4.05.34), Tom Griffiths with a personal best 4.07.41 and Jake Healy (4.52.5) in the 1500 while Stan Erlam ran 11.24.51 for the 3000.

Trafford Meeting (Young Athletes Medal Meeting):29 August

Luke Williams set club records in the 75m (9.7) and 18.9 (150) as well as high jumping 1.45 (which would have been a third record had he not broken that last time out!). Mike Ehlen shaved 0.07 secs off the 80m hurdles to remove John  Ray's 1998 record. Mike also cleared 1.75 in the high jump and shot putted 9.70. John Ashcroft beat Mike Burke's 600m record by more than five seconds with 1.43.3 and also ran the 150 in 22.6.

We do not know all the finishing positions but will add them as they become available. Samantha Fraser recorded 12.2 in the 70H, 1.50 in the high jump and 8.57 in the shot putt. Laura Crook ran 20.5(150), 1.43.1(600) and shot putted 7.55. Josie Barrow went over the 75H in 13.6 and high jumped 1.40. Emily Dickinson completed the 600 in 2.19.3 ran 26.0(150) and long jumped 2.46.

Anthony Marsh ran 12.9(100) and 58.8(400), Alex Helsby missing 60secs by 0.9 of a second. Vicky Davies gave the high jump a miss to compete in the 100 (13.9) and shot putt 7.92). Terri Cunningham recorded 14.5(100), 6.17 (shot putt) and 30.5(200).

Daniel Hughes also contested three events 11.1(75), 23.0(150) and shot putt (8.35). Louise Hayes recorded 24.9(150), 2.11.6 (600) and 3.04 (long jump). Gina Millington made her debut with 14.5 (75), 30.0(200) and 3.46 (long jump) while Natalie Bannister's trio were 16.8(Hurdles), 12.6(100) and 2.74(long jump).

Andy McDonagh returned from holiday to record 54.3 (400) while Julia Bennett (14.3) and Anna Howard (31.3) competed in the 100 and 200 metres respectively. Katy Waterworth was camping all weekend but still managed 10.5 (75) and 21.1(150), sister Lucy making her debut with 12.0(75) and 3.14 (long jump). Natasha Le Surf covered the 75 and 150 in 11.3 and 23.4 respectively. Liane Bibby completed her holiday by running 12.2(75), 25.5(150) and throwing the javelin 12.67.

Winston Ladies' 5k :Wythenshaw: 28 August.

This excellent race for ladies of all standards was the last in this year's road race series. Sarah Charnock took second place in 18.52 behind Emma Jones (Belle Vue Racers), Julia Eccleston was 11th (21.31) and Chris Dickinson finished 21st (23.30). Had there been a team race St Helens-Sutton would have won it. Next year's race reverts to the traditional date of the first weekend in September (10 a.m. start) and will be the first race in the 2006/7 road race championship.

Far and Wide - Weekend Roundup:

On Saturday James Farghar won the U17 race at the Gargrave Show Fell Race in North Yorkshire recording 12.34 and beating his nearest opponent by 20 secs. On Sunday, Sarah Charnock took sixth place in the Cheshire Road Race Championship, incorporated into the Birchwood 10k, recording 39.54 (137th overall). Dorothy Fairhurst was 756th in 56.35 and Emma Shillabeer, who has been training at the club recorded 61.06.

Terry Davies Memorial Meeting : Warrington 21 August

The day was warm and tiring and a number of athletes found sitting in the sun was not the best way to prepare for their events. Anyone who knows a result which is not included should let Julia Hayes know as soon as possible so it can be added to the report.

We had some good performances including a new club U13 girls' record from Samantha Frazer in the high jump. Sam leapt 1.56 to set a track record for an U13 girl. She also won the shot by five cms ahead of Laura Crook with pb of 7.89. Laura won the 800 in 2.36.5 and tied with Katie Waterworth in the 80m both girls recording 10.4 in separate heats. Katie later won the 150 in 20.6. There were high jump victories for Mike Ehlen (1.70) and Dylan Riley (1.45)

There were other winners too: Terri Cunningham leaving the opposition training to win the 300m in 49.2, to add to her fourth placing in the 100 (14.5) and fifth in the 200 (32.0). Rachael Price won the 100m in 13.6 and finishing third in the 200 (28.3) while Ben Hodgetts made a winning debut in the 100 with 13.6 in the U13 Boys and claimed second in the 200 (27.8). Karen Jarvis won the 1500 (6.47.3) and 3000m (14.20.8) with a smile on her face. It was a smile, honest!

Tony Raffle (5.26.1) won the 1500 (5.26.1), Wayne Turner (5.59.7) was 2nd on his debut and took third in the 3000 (12.50.1). Wayne and Vicky Davies collected medals in the high jump (1.35), shot putt (8.53) and 100(14.8), Chelsea Jarvis was second in the long jump (3.49), 600 (1.55.9)and 75 (11.9). Liane Bibby claimed second place in the cricket ball competition (19.84) with Elisha Kane throwing 19.14 in the under 9 age group. Liane was tenth in the 75 (10.5) and ran in the 150. Daniel Pimblett threw 29.40m to win a medal in the boys' competition, ran the 75 in 11.7 and completed the 600 in 2.12.5.

David Griffiths won his 100 in 12.1 and was third overall to add to his second in the long jump (5.46). Thaddeus Anim-Somuah's late surge earned him second in the 400 (54.2) to add to his third in the 200 (24.0). Anna Powell (2.45.4) and Adam Fackey (2.27.3) claimed bronze medals in the 800. Anna also made her debut in the high jump taking fourth with 1.35. Anthony Marsh (5.11) was second in the long jump, fourth in the 200 (26.1) and fifth in the 100 (13.1).

Danielle Stevenson, who also made her high jump debut (1.05), was fourth in the shot with 6.71. Daniel Hughes (8.29) and Alex Shaw  (9.58) each picked up bronze medals in the latter event. Daniel also ran the 200 while Alex was fourth in the long jump. Holly Keenaghan finished off a long afternoon by claiming second in the 200 (30.5).. Jamie White was third in the 1500 (5.36.3), fifth in the long jump (3.63) and recorded 15.3 in the 75. Rose Hindley claimed third places in the under 11 75 (11.7) and 150 24.0.

Late results which have become available include Alex Helsby (400 and long jump 60.0-5th & 4.73 - 3rd), Drew Atherton (long jump 3.87 -3rd, high jump 1.30 4th and 200 31.0, seventh) Louise Hayes (600 : 2.15.3 -9th), Dylan Riley (Shot - 7.47: 4th), Elliot Barron (100 15.1 & 200 31.8:), Louis Jarvis (75: 12.2), Louise Hayes (150 25.7 600 : 2.15.3 - ninth in both events). Olivia Renshaw was 12th in the 75 in 13.0.

The coaches had an excellent day, Carl Bibby, John Irwin, Dave Morley, Andy Drillingcourt, Joe Ehlen and Phil Thomas all able for once able to spend time watching athletes perform and offer advice instead of officiating or team managing. The next meeting for young athletes will be at Trafford on Bank Holiday Monday with the third Cheshire League at Connahs Quay the following Sunday. North of England Pentathlon : Birmingham: 21 August.

Rachael Hutchinson set a club Under15 Pentathlon record finishing ninth the NoEAA competition which was held in conjunction with the AAA event. Rachael's event scores were as follows:

Northern Inter-Counties : Cudworth 20 August:

A select group of club members represented Merseyside in the Northern Inter-Counties with Mike Ehlen and Dave Forrester winning their events, with 1.75 (high jump) and 4.05.92 (1500) respectively. Ben Fisher was fourth in the javelin (50.44), Becky Keegan contested both the shot (8.61 - 7th) and Javelin (25.15 - 3rd) while Rachael Hutchinson received a last minute call up for the discus (19.88 - 6th). Josie Barrow earned her first Merseyside vest clearing 1.45 for sixth place in the high jump.

Last year we had one individual winner, this year we had two. In addition, the club provided Joe Ehlen and Roseanne Hutchinson as team managers. Congratulations to everyone on their selection and performances. Results are available on the North of England website.

Grand Prix Meeting : 16: August:

There were some good performances from those who went to Trafford, Sarah Charnock setting a pb 4.58.58 in the 1500. Steve Mayers also improved 4.06.27 while Dave Twigg (4.10.13), Tom Griffiths (4.11.12) and John Appleton (4.40.26) maintained recent gains. Jourdan Cotter 2.22.92, Tony Raffle 2.29.74 and Greg Williams 2.01.50 were all in good form, Stan Erlam motored to 11.19.94 (3000) while Ben Fisher threw the javelin 57.38.

Miscellaneous Results:14 August

Club records fell at the Arnold Seddon Memorial Meeting at Wigan. Katie Waterworth set a new under 13 100m record with 13.3 in her heat, Samantha Frazer made a successful debut with a club record 1.47 in the under 13 high jump while John Ashcroft, just back from the French Pyrennes, set a new under 13 800m record of 2.25.6. There were medals for shot putter Daniel Hughes (8.95), Laura Crook who won the 200 in 28.3. Elisha Kane recorded 2.18.1 in the 600, and Daniel Pimblett  threw the cricket ball 30.49. Other results included Samantha Frazer 12.3(70m) 4.73(LJ), Katie Waterworth 28.5 (200) 4.18(LJ), Laura Crook 13.7(100), 4.03(LJ), Elisha Kane 13.69(CB), Daniel Hughes 14.4(100), 30.4(200) and John Ashcroft 1.20(HJ). Well done to all.

Ben Fisher, who received a last minute call up to represent the North in the Under 20 Area Match at Derby recorded a season's best 58.08 for second place in the javelin.

At Birmingham, Mike Ehlen (11.88 -triple jump), Becci Keegan (25.10 - Javelin), Dave Forrester, Thaddeus Anim Somuah (23.85) and Andrew McDonagh (2.03.55 - 800) all competed in the AAA's Young Athletes' championships. Full results as soon as we have them.

A small number of athletes competed in the Cheshire League match at Bury which included a ladies relay team comprising of Joanne Sturgeon, Karen Jarvis, Layla Tapley and Julia Hayes(!). The official results unfortunately contain a substantial number of errors with the results of the senior ladies' relay missing.

The stars of the day were the under 11's, third (86) behind Macclesfield (100), Bury (95) but ahead of Altrincham (32), Blackley (30) and Manchester (22). Andrew Harvey went through the afternoon undefeated 3.40 (SLJ), 19.30 (Turbo Javelin), 12.4 (75), 1.57(600) closely followed by Michael Causer who won the SLJ 3.47 and TJ 15.66 and took second place in the 75 (12.5). Michael Grove (12.0)and Louis Jarvis (13.4) were third and first in their 75m heats. Chelsea Jarvis took the SLJ (3.50), 75 (12.5) and finished second in the TJ (10.30) and 600 (1.58.6). Louise Hayes won her SLJ (2.92) and 75m (13.3), taking second place in the 600 (2.08.3). Rose Hindley won the 75 (12.4), was second in the TJ (9.24) and fourth in the 600 (2.18).

Danielle Stevenson made a good contribution in the U13's with 5.43(LJ 5th), Javelin 15.16(2nd), 14.7(75 3rd) and 3.16.1 (600). Joanne Sturgeon added the 75 (15.4 -4th) to her 800 (2.37.8 -3rd). The U13 Boys duo of Darren Bittern and Michael Strong did well in the long jump, 200 and 600. Darren's marks were 3.06(5), 35.1(5) and 3.32.1(5)  with Michael recording 3.04(3), 38.5(4) and 3.37.8(3).

The club's senior men, under 17's took the weekend as did both sexes in the under 15's, although the under 17's were recorded as scoring points in the throwing event!!!!  Karen Jarvis LJ: 2.45(2), 800: 2.39(3), Julia Hayes Discus:12.21(4) and Layla Tapley 3.36(LJ 3rd), 12.39 (DT 4th), 16.0(100 4th) and 3.53 (800 2nd) scored 68 pts to give the females fifth place. The males were sixth with 28pts. The next Cheshire League match takes place at Connahs Quay on the first weekend in September.

Sale 10 : 8 August

We think nine members took part in this event but can only find eight in the results. Pam Appleton (207) 84.27 (2nd Over 50 Lady), Rosie O'Hagan (227) 87.38, 26th lady in the open competition, Louise Casey (229), 87.40, 28th, Tony Roche (235) 89.03, 36th over 40 to finish, Janet Holmes (249) 92.11(4th over 50), Dorothy Fairhurst (254) 93.11(1st over 60), Jean Dearing (264) 97.41, 7th over 45, Janice Lawson (272), 101.38, 6th over 50. The first four ladies formed the team which finished in third place behind Macclesfield and Penny lane Striders. Northern League: Stretford 7 August

Despite lacking any competitors in four events the club finished fifth only 30 points behind Manx in the final league match of the season and took fifth place overall in division 2(W). There were individual winners, Ben Fisher (53.75), throwing over 60m in the javelin but failing to stop at the white line! Jourdan Cotter (4.55.8) less than half a second from breaking two club records, Lucy Mitchell (10.22) with a convincing triple jump win and Nicola Quinn (21.3) who remains unbeaten (one A string and three B string victories) in the 100H.

In the latter Caroline Morley (17.8) set a new club record, slightly slower than her wind assisted run at Stoke but a new legitimate mark. Natalie Mullineux performed steadily in the throws, Vicky Davies (shot), Terri Cunningham (discus), Lucy Mitchell (javelin) and Julia Hayes (Hammer) providing support. An unwell Helen Grady produced a personal best (2.51) in the 800, an injured Sue Lowrie almost broke 60 in the 400m and there was a superb double from Christine Dickinson and Karen Jarvis who made their league debuts in the 3000m

Wayne Joyce volunteered to run the 200 and two relays. Thaddeus Anim Somuah produced a superb  long jump (5.57) for third, Phil Robinson was his usual solid self in the throws while Richard Atherton continued to show his potential in the triple jump by almost reaching 12 metres. The middle distance mantle was taken on by Tony Raffle, debut boy Billy Mousdale and Stan Erlam who competed in his first 800m for four years. Ste Moran took on the role of A string sprinter with gusto and was part of a brilliant 4x100 team which finished second.

We had a plethora of officials (Pam Appleton, Janet Holmes, who ran the Sale 10 and then came to timekeep), George Mullineux, Joe Ehlen, Ian Fisher, Julia Hayes and John Irwin on the field, Phil Thomas's role as divisional secretary obviated the need to have a track judge. Phil acted as team manager and led the chorus of Happy Birthday for Julia Hayes whose present was to attend the match and compete in the javelin (19.98). Some people have all the luck.

Thanks to those who provided transport, Christine Dickinson, John Irwin, Lucy Mitchell, Richard Atherton, Mrs Cunningham, George Mullineux, Joe Ehlen, Mr Fisher and to Roger McCall who came to support and would have putt the shot had a place been available. . Results

Grand Prix Meeting - Stretford 2 August

Andy McDonagh set his second club record in 48 hours, recording 2.02.57 for a new under 15 800m best. Former holder Dave Forrester ran 4.01.3 for the 1500m while Dave Twigg (2.00.22), Jourdan Cotter (2.25.69) and Greg Williams (2.03.5) stuck to the two laps. Steve Mayers (4.07.25) and Tom Griffiths (4.10.72) set personal bests in the1500m. It's looking good for the road relays if the athletes decide to enter.
