June 2003 News

Putting the Record(s) Straight.

Thanks to the work of the intrepid Tony Raffle we have been able to correct some of the previously stated records. Wayne Joyce has now been awarded the under 20 and under 17, 400 metres records based on the results from the 1996 and 1998 Merseyside Championships. Wayne also reclaims the 200 under 20 mark from Jon Calder who was thought to have beaten it at Lancaster this year. In addition, Natalie Mullineux reclaims the under 13 discus record. It doesn't stop here, of course, any members with information on club performances are urged to let Phil Thomas borrow it to ensure all our records are up to date and accurate.

Panic Over:

We are pleased to report that Paul Forrester is fit and well following his recent early departure from school in an ambulance. He has asked the club to thank all those who expressed concern about his health and said he will be at the next Young Athletes Match at Crewe on 29 June (though not announcing on this occasion).

National Young Athletes League : Crewe. 29 June.

Transport, by car, will be leaving the Sports Centre at 9.30.am. The match starts at 12 noon and we expect 54 competing athletes to travel, so all parents with cars are encouraged to provide space for athletes without transport and athletes without transport should offer compensation to drivers providing space.

Primary Schools' Meeting A Hugh Success : Tuesday 17 June

The primary schools' championships were held at Sutton Sports Centre under the organising auspices of Terry Bates, the Athletics' Development Officer for St Helens M B C and Terry Arnold, the club's schools' liaison officer.

Described by many teachers present as the "best organised" school`s meeting they've attended, the day was marked by good weather, great enthusiasm and commitment from all participating schools.

The winning schools were Queens Park (Girls) and Bleak Hill (Boys). The individual boys' award went to Adam Draper (Lee Vale) while the girls' award was shared between Zoe Woodward and Laura Crook (Queens Park). All three winners are also members of St Helens-Sutton A C.

Many thanks to the Leisure and Recreation team, including announcer John Tattum, the many student volunteers, Dave Hitchen and timekeepers Mr & Mrs Wakfield. It was a pleasure to see Tom Carson taking a keen interest in the event following his recent presentation to our committee.

Thanks, too, to our own members Dave Morley, John Irwin, Julia Hayes, Chris Dempsey, Sue Lowrie, Joe Ehlen, Jessica Cretu, Layla Tapley, Caroline Morley, Emma McClatchey, Lucy Mitchell, Sue Clague, Louise Hayes and Phil Thomas for contributing to another community partnership event which forms a key part of the overall development plan for athletics in St Helens.

Results:

Computer literate readers will have noticed that we have started using Microsoft Excel to produce our historical record of results. That means instead of having a separate page for every set of results all the results will be on one page for each month and can be selected by scrolling across the bottom of the page to the named fixture. For the non-computer literate this makes it a lot quicker to write up the results and means we can get them on screen as soon as possible after the event. As we research the club's historical records and, in due course, as we refashion the screen, all results will adopt the same format - given time!

Ever Rising Standards:

Following the latest round of League meetings the number of club athletes now qualified for next year's Northern Under 20 championships has risen to nine, the latest being triple jumpers Jake Davidson and Lucy Mitchell.
