St
Helens Sutton Athletic Club
April 2003 News
National Young Athletes League: Burnley
We have been given to understand that the match will start earlier than
scheduled owing to the number of teams taking part. Therefore we will be
meeting at the Sports Centre at 9.15 on Sunday 4 May. If you have transport
bring it. If you need transport tell your coach or Phil Thomas so it can be
arranged. Individual notices will be given out to all athletes.
Merseyside Championships: Wavertree 10 May.
The club has recorded a 500% in entries for the Merseyside Championships.
This would have been even more but for the high price of entry fees,
especially for the under 15's, a subject on which individual committee
members have made their views known to the County Committee.
Last year we had five members entered and won five medals. This year, to
date, we have had 25 members entered and are looking to increase the number
of medals won. Those known to have entered so far are:- John Appleton, Greg
Brierley, John Broomhead, Alice Burgess, Mike Burke, Jon Calder, Lucy
Cannon, Ben Clough, Jessica Cretu, Barry Cunliffe, Stephanie Currie, Mike
Ehlen, Ben Fisher, Dave Forrester, Tom Griffiths, Julia Hayes, Rachael
Hutchinson, Vicky Johnson, Melissa McLoughlin, Sara McLoughlin, Steve
Mayers, Caroline Morley, Taja Rundle, Ryan Tapley and Charlotte Walkden.
The County Committee has decided that anyone who wants to enter on the day
can do so prior to 12 noon for £3 per event. After 12 noon it will be £5. St
Helens-Sutton is in favour of as many people as possible supporting the
County Championships so if anyone else is unsure about entering please
contact Phil Thomas or your coach at the club for advice.
League Teams:
The teams for the Northern Women's League match at Trafford on Saturday 3
May has been selected, athletes have been notified and the full team is on
the club noticeboard. The provisional team for the Young Athletes League at

Full details of transport arrangments will be notified to all athletes next
week. The men's team should be finalised by team captain, Ray Vose, in the
coming week.

closed as the race limit has been reached.
St Helens Sports Council & Club Development
Chairman Ray Vose attended a very interesting meeting of the Sports Council
held at the Town Hall on Wednesday 23 April. The club will be applying for
accreditation from the Council. Our development plan continues to grow with
the news that Colin Cunliffe is now a Grade 3 coach. Colin is actively
helping Dave Morley with sprints and will be involving himself in the jumps
in the near future alongside other qualified coaches. Our qualified coaches
now total more than two dozen.
Congratulations to:
Diane Appleton our latest Level 1 coach and Jon Calder whose 11.9 at Bury
was a Junior men's record for the 100 metres.

June, will not be held this year

Merseyside Youth Games Trials : Monday 7 April
The club organised the Merseyside Youth Games trials on behalf of St Helens
MBC and are actively involved in ensuring that those children who took part
will have the maximum opportunity to represent the St Helens in this
prestigious event which takes place at Bebington in July.
Further trials in specific events will take place in the near future. Julia
Hayes, John Irwin and Sue Clague are liaising with Terry Bates from St
Helens MBC to benefit all local children.
Many thanks to the parents who turned up in support of their children and to
the schools which sent athletes. Thanks also to Terry Bates for his support
during the evening. Schools will be notified of all results shortly.
Many thanks too to timekeepers Sue Clague, Janet Holmes, Pam Appleton,
judges Fred Bluett, Phil Thomas, George Mullineux, John Irwin, Frank
Atkinson, Joe Ehlen and Danny McLoughlin, starter, Mrs Hutchinson and scribe
Julia Hayes.
As a club we are proud of our position in the community and look forward to
further development of an integrated role alongside St Helens MBC in the
expansion of the sport in 2003 and beyond.
