Midlands Open Meeting, Birmingham : Sunday 22nd February 2015
New member Darren Scott ran in this open meeting recording a couple of fantastic results. He first broke the indoor 200m MV45 European record, running 22.58 (the world record is 22.57), he then went on to break the the indoor 4x200m MV45 world record.

High Cup Nick Fell Race, Dufton : Saturday 21st February 2015
A joint St Helens team of Greg Carns, Mark Liptrot (St Helens Sutton AC) and Chris Reid (St Helens Striders) made their way to the tiny village of Dufton in the beautiful Eden Valley beneath the Pennines to run the 9 mile High Cup Nick fell race, organised by legendary fell runner and former British Champion Morgan Donnelly.
In a field of over 200 made up of big turnouts from major fell-running clubs, Mark was first of the St Helens group back in 1hour 18mins, 39th place and winning the 3rd Vet 50 prize. Next back was Greg Carns just 5 mins behind in 1 hour 23. Chris finished in 1:34 in his first ever fell race. As he crested the top of the climb, with the wind blowing the waterfall upwards, he looked back down over the rocks he had just ascended, and was glad that he hadn't fallen down it!
Unlike many very expensive road races, the entry fee was £6, which included soup and a roll at the end. There were also tea/coffee and delicious home-made cakes for sale. Altogether the event, run by volunteers, will have raised over £1000 for village hall funds. That's fell running.
Manchester League Cross Country Match 5, Wythenshawe Park, Manchester : Saturday 14th February 2015
Saturday 14th February 2015 saw the final Manchester Area Cross Country League held at Wythenshawe Park. There were 19 athletes representing the club.
First of all, for the under 11 girls Abigail McHugh covered the distance of 2000m in 17th place in 9.08, she was shortly followed by Amber Escoffery who completed the race in 24th place in 9.18. Also Lucy Bridge finished the race in 25th place in 9.20 whilst Hollie Brussels finished in 40th place in 10.13. The girls finished 6th overall.
Next was the under 11 boys and under 13 girls 2350m race. Ben Toole led the boys home in 18th place in 10.16 and Arron Leach finished 24th in a time of 10.42. Matthew Dodd brought the team home in 30th place in 11.45 meaning that the team finished 6th too. Lucy Price was also competing in this race; she finished in 42nd position in 10.52.
The under 13 boys and under 15 girls covered the distance of 3050m, Michael Brussels completed the race in 21st place in 12.37, Matthew Slevin finished 23rd in 12.40 whilst Liam Houghton finished in 25th place in 12.43 and James Carberry finished 32nd in 15.49. The under 13 boys finished in 6th place. Samantha Price completed the race in 20th position in a time of 13.14.
For the senior ladies, Gemma Connolly completed the 7150m course in 4th place in a time of 30.44 whereas Rachel McGoldrick finished 27th in 33.10 and Maria McGoldrick finished in 56th place in 35.41.
Finally the senior men's 9150m race saw John Greenall finished 63rd in a time of 34.20, Barry Graney finished in 116th in 36.32 and Andy O'Connor completed the race in 191st place in 39.48.

Brian Renshall
Brian Renshall, one of Sutton's star runners in the 1960's and 1970's recently sent a copy of the club history to Dr Mike Turner who was a mainstay of Liverpool Harriers at that time. Mike was a Cambridge don and has now retired and still lives in Cambridge from where, at the height of his achievements, he remained loyal to his club. Regrettably he recently had a leg amputed and has been generally unwell.
In reply to Brian's gift Mike wrote a little ode which appears here on the website. It refers to our late President Billy McMinnis and his brother Fred who won the Northern XC title at Sherdley Park in 1948 and Alf Tyrer who took the same title in 1939. Sutton won the team title in both years.
All of us who remember Mike in his heyday (there's still some of us left) wish him all the best at this difficult time and for the future.

"The first one is self explanatory (see caption at bottom). The second one is me and Mike Freary (Bolton) ploughing through heavy snow during the Northern XC Champs held in Sherdley Park in 1969. The senior mens team (Ron Barlow, Steve James, Brian Renshall, Peter Roberts, Brian Woolford & Colin Johnson) placed third with six inside the first 43."
"The third one is me (2nd 8.23) Peter Roberts (3rd 8.24) and Ron Barlow (8.21) after winning the 3000mtr team race at Widnes Police Sports held at Ruskin Drive in 1970. The last one is me leading Ron Hill (Bolton) going into the last lap of the "Sutton 7" in 1969,we have just gone past the Green Dragon Pub. I should add that it wasn't like that at the finish. However Ron didn't win it because he was not allowed to go through the finish line. Would you believe that despite his reputation Norman Ashcroft (Club Sec.) after first saying Ron couldn't run at all because Bolton hadn't entered him then relented and said he couldn't officially finish !! Bit of an awkward bugger was Norman !"
Liverpool and District Cross Country Championship, Clarke Gardens, Liverpool :
Sunday 8th February 2015
Sunday 8th February 2015 saw the Liverpool and District Cross Country Championship held at Clarkes Gardens.
There were 10 athletes representing the club.
First home was Luke Towers, who finished in 11th place. Next was John Greenall finishing in 33rd place. Also Andy Wilson finished the race in 43rd position shortly followed by Barry Graney who completed the race in 65th place. Rachel McGoldrick was the 3rd female overall and finished in 79th place, whilst Maurice Collins completed the race in 80th place. Peter Johnson finished in 86th place and Ian Hayburn finished 93rd. Maria McGoldrick completed the race in 103rd place and Louise Hogg finished in 124th.
Overall the club finished 8th!
