Northern 6 Stage Road Relay - Hartlepool - 27 September The club finished fifty fourth (second Merseyside team) in the Northern six stage road relay along Hartlepool Promenade. Danny Griffiths opened up with 19.30 (64) followed by Dave Forrester 16.11 (30), who recorded the sixth fastest lap on stage two, despite the pressures of Freshers' Week. Phil Robinson, getting stamina work in for his summer track season, returned in 23.27(62) while Steve Mayers 19.04(55) gained seven places on the fourth leg. Ian Hayburn (two stone overweight from a summer's enforced idleness with illness) gained one place 21.46 (54) which was held by Ian Costello 19.54 (54). Although it was not our strongest the lads have laid down a marker for the winter. With athletes returning from injury, or getting fit after time off, coupled with more encouragement of trainers into racers the club can perform well over cross country during the winter. Results:
Weekend Round Up 20/21 September Martin Howard was 52nd in the Pennington Flash race at Leigh while Matthew Crehan won the Boggart Hole Clough 3k in 9.14 (not 16.09 as previously reported - even Jim Crehan can run it in that time!!!) North West Road Relays - Marbury Park, Comerbach, Cheshire 13 September These championships took place in excellent weather on a superb course, organised by Cheshire County AA. The club won medals in every age group other than the U13 Boys and senior men both of whom finished fourth. The U17 girls' team of Jemma Shaw (10.47), Heather Drillingcourt (11.11) and Natalie Garrity (10.37) (never follow Google Maps!) were second a feat mirrored by the senior ladies' trio of Liz Whitfield, (19.52), Lyn Webb (22.45) and Sue Crehan (23.49). The latter were backed by a B team of Chris Dempsey (26.35), Rosie O'Hagan (26.47) and Joanne Keogh (making her road relay debut - 28.45)
In the men's races there was success for the U15 trio of Jamie White (8.53), Jamie Webb (9.38) and Adam White (13.38), who answered a last minute call to run, to clinch medals for the team. A special word for Lauren Bradshaw (11.19) and Danny Hughes (19.40), neither of whom made the A team on this occasion, both of whom ran to support their club colleagues and performed superbly in an excellent display of club spirit. Julia Hayes was the team manager for the young athletes, Ian Hayburn for the senior men and Phil Thomas for the senior ladies. There was a good turn out of parents. Thanks to everyone who turned up in support. Snr Men Pics Pics Results England Athletics Membership Numbers: After 18 months negotiation with England Athletics the club has finally received members' individual registration numbers. These are available from Pam Appleton or Phil Thomas on request. Please note, owing to technical problems at England Athletics, cards will not be issued until 2009. Failure to pay annual club subscriptions will result in registration numbers being suspended but will not free members from their obligation to pay their annual membership. Annual Membership fees (which become due in January) are £15 for seniors and £10 for all other age groups - including athletes in full time secondary and university education - while Under 11's remain at £5. The club underwrites the registration costs for members who want to compete. Miscellaneous Matthew Stone has been selected to attend a training camp in the United States with Michael Johnson, who apparently knows a bit about 400m running. Apparently the former world record holder and Olympic champion will have a collection of top coaches working on Matthew's fitness, speed, start, technique, flexibility, conditioning, nutrition and mentality (!!) Matthew is hoping to return with the knowledge to run a sub 50 next season. All he has to do is to make his legs run fast enough. It's been a bumper year for babies. In addition to Julie Ann presenting William Vose to the world, Michelle Ireland, nee Murray, had a little boy and Lara Mason a girl. All are doing well. Annual Subscriptions: 2008 All members in arrears with their annual subscriptions will receive a final reminder this month. Any payments made after the due date may be subject to a late payment charge. Please ensure you pay immediately. Annual General Meeting 8 September Billy McMinnis, now in his early nineties, presided over the Annual General Meeting held at Sutton Sports Centre. Billy recalled that he was training twice a day in the early 1950's (110 miles a week) and produced a photograph showing the 137 trophies and medals he won during his illustrious career. He also presented the club with a cheque. The Treasurer reported that the club's finances remained sound and that no increase in annual memberships or subscriptions were planned at this time. The Chairman reported on a successful year and pointed to the need for an increase in the number of persons participating in all aspects of the club. Existing office holders were re-elected and, in a surprise move, (the chairman, at least, was very surprised), life membership was conferred on Phil Thomas. It was noted in the minutes that, for once in his life, the chairman was lost for words!!!! In post AGM discussions Ray Vose offered to provide a brief talk to all coaches on the importance of athlete year planning. This talk will take place immediately after training later this month and is open to all coaches and other interested parties irrespective of their event. Further presentations during the winter will be made by Adrian Webb, Phil Thomas, Sue Lowrie and Sue Clague. Kirkham 10k and Ryder Run, Leyland 7 September. Matthew Crehan made his debut for the club winning the Ryder Run at Leyland in 17.02, Jim Crehan was seventh in 19.45. At Kirkham Dennis Wharton was 25th in 39.21, John Appleton 44th in 42.42 and Pam Appleton, running in the older age V55 age group (we all know she's only 21) 124th in 51.09. Cheshire League: 7 September: Trafford. Chloe Rigby was adjudged top female athlete at the Cheshire League match at Trafford, according to the official results, clearing 1.35 for victory in the U13 Girls in the high jump. Michael Causer won the U15 Boys' clearing 1.53 which represented a personal best as his previous best of 1.55 at Rotherham was discounted when that competition was abandoned because of high winds. Sophie Rigby won the long jump and there were victories for Jonathan Causer and Daniel Elston (600), Jamie Dinnar (javelin), Rachel Woosey (800) and the 4x100m U15 Girls team. Full results for all competitors who included Lucy Griffiths, Adam Woosey, Sally Ashton, Chris Garroty, Matthew Atherton, Tricia Spark, Liane Bibby, Rachel Wilcock, T T Caton Hand, Rose Johnson, debutant Siobhan Hattersley, Heather Drillingcourt and Michael Hughes have been circulated and are on the club notice board. If anyone has been omitted please let me known immediately. My apologies for not giving full details of everyone's performances but I am still trying to catch up on matters delayed over the past month because of illness. Julia Hayes, who was disappointed that the senior men's event was the shot putt - thus preventing the long awaited Hughes - Rigby battle for javelin supremacy taking place, has especially asked that her thanks be given to everyone who provided assistance during the season after she was asked to act as team manager at short notice. Colwyn Bay Games: 6 September If you don't like rain Wales wasn't the place to be today - even the coast road was closed (bad news for the anti-motorist head of North Wales police) Liane Bibby made it to Colwyn Bay where she threw the javelin 26.88m in teeming rain for victory, collected silver in slightly better condition in the discus (19.97m) and ran the 100m in 14.0 secs.
