Gemma Connelly, our of only two competitors on this occasion,
took second place in this race with an excellent run of

second place in the over 60 category with a time of
48.21.
L&D Sefton Park : 25 November -
Report by Barry Graney
The previous week's rain made this more like a real cross country fixture instead
of the usual fast course at Sefton park.
Dave Forrester ran another excellent race to clinch second place in the under 17's (15.01), a second away from winning the event.
Julia Eccleston competed alone in the Cross challenge for the senior women, coming home in 110th (31.27) in a race that Jo Pavey won comfortably.
The men's race saw a large turnout (400+) and good support from St Helens' senior men and women.
Greg Williams continues with his good form, leading the team
in with an excellent 7th position (37.38), followed by Mark Laithwaite
in 13th (38.10). The rest of the team packed well, with little over 40 seconds covering the final four of the counting six :-
Ste Mayers (21,39:26),
Barry Graney (23,39:46), Pete Johnson (25,39:55), and Jon Appleton (29,40:08).
The rest of the squad was completed by I Hayburn (36, 40:48), C Parry (49, 42:22), M Shillibear (53, 42:45), R Vose (56, 42:55), D Wharton (60, 43:08), P Burgess (63, 43:34), C McEntee (78, 44:31),

North West Sports Hall Finals : 19
November
Following a successful town trial and team selection by team
managers Julia Hayes, Andy Drillingcourt and Carl Bibby,
the St Helens MBC primary schools won their fourth
successive victory in the North West Primary Sports Hall finals
held at Sports City when the Boys team, captained by Lewis
Jarvis, finished joint first with Wirral with Liverpool well
beaten. Lewis' twin sister, Chelsea, led the girls into
fourth place, just nine points short of victory. St Helens were
first on the combined score although no trophy was on offer to
mark this prestigious achievement. The success is yet another
example of the close working relationship between St Helens MBC
and St Helens-Sutton A C. Full details and results when available.
18/19 November : Various
On Saturday the 18th Gill Laithwaite was the first
lady to finish in the prestigious Brampton to Carlisle 10 mile
road race, recording an impressive 58.51 for a new club
record. The following day Gill jogged round the Preston
10 in 69.00 finishing 148th, while Sarah
Charnock also had a second outing in 24 hours recording 66.24
for 99th position. The day before Decathlete Phil
Robinson tackled the Gill Pimblott Memorial 5k Trail Race
at Tyldsley, finishing ninth in the senior men's category
in 21.29, taking 26th place overall and collecting
an individual medal. Obviously the hurdles will be less of a
problem for Phil this coming track season.
18 November : Merseyside Schools
Cross Country League - Calderstones Park.
Andrew Cowley continued his fine form, with ninth place
in the under 12's, while Lauren Bradshaw (14th) and
Sophie Rigby (35th) contested the under 14 event.
18 November Manchester Area League
: Boggart Hole Clough:
The under 15 girls' team are assured of a set of medals
provided they turn out a full team in the last two matches. Jemma
Shaw was fifth in 15.11 (and now lies third
in the overall contest), Heather Drillingcourt was 13th
(16.36 -5th overall) and thanks to a brave showing
from Elizabeth Mousdale (18th in 21.13 (9th
overall) the girls now lie third with only three teams
still in the competition.
David Forrester (18.51) and Chelsea Jarvis (5.40)
were easy winners of the Under 17 and Under 11
contests, Chelsea was supported by team mates Elisha
Kane (6.24) and Lucy Renshaw (6.30).
The senior ladies remain in contention lying fifth overall with
Sarah Charnock (30.28 14th) in third place on
aggregate. Julia Eccleston (20th 31.36), Christine
Dempsey (43rd: 34.54) is sixth veteran over 45, Karen
Jarvis (35.05 -47th), Jo Clisham-Marsh (52nd) and Pam
Appleton (52nd 38.32) now lies 4th veteran over 50.
Jamie White (3rd in 13.56) moved to third in the
overall contest while the splendid Andy Harvey (14.59) was
fifth on the day and on aggregate. Unfortunately, the team
fell out of contention as did the under 13 Girls for whom Louise
Hayes (10.49 - 22) and Kathryn Wilson (11.35 -34th)
completed the course without Tricia Spark who was taken ill
on the day and couldn't compete.
With Jake Healy out of action for the season following his
successful abdominal operation the Under 15 Boys put on a team
display led by David Griffiths (13th -19.09) supported by
John Ashcroft (16th 19.41); Danny Hughes (19th 20.19) and
Adam Fackey (22nd.21.06) who will get stronger as he
gradually returns to fitness.
Four senior men competed Matt Cullen (14th: 37.27), Pete
Johnson (68th ; 41.25), Robbie Marsh (80th 42.09) and Matt
Shillabeer (112th - 44.44), in what is probably the
toughest of the League races in the North West. The next match is
at Macclesfield on December 3rd. Results:
11 November Dunnerdale 5.5. Fell
Race 1700ft climb
Sarah Charnock competed in this race, reporting tears of
joy (or was that fear?) as she ran downhill into the fresh air
that characterises the Fells. Individual result not yet known.
Various : 5 November
Dorothy Fairhurst was 81st lady in the Wheeldon
Through the Villages Race near Chorley recording 84.22.
Christine Dempsey finished third lady in the Northern
Veterans 10k race at Leigh in 48.31, Karen Jarvis
finishing fourth in 51.57. Both did well to finish
following the previous evening's seniors' night out, although
Chris's description of being beaten by an Orang Utang named Clyde
probably indicates it may have some effect on her performance.
Julia Eccleston decided against going to Abergele when she
realised the clocks hadn't gone forward eight hours but she had,
in fact, only had two hours sleep. Anyone ringing Ian Hayburn
is advised to speak in a very quiet voice. Apparently a good time
was had by all.
National Cross Country Relays: -
Mansfield 4 November
The club sent two teams to the National Cross Country relays
and came away with consistent times. The organisers spent a lot of
money on introducing chip timing but reproducing times to the
nearest one-hundreth of a second in road relays in pointless
unless if affects the outcome and, as no fastest times were given,
who really cares? Times given below are to the nearest second.
Louise Hayes opened for the Under 13's with 8.49
(57), debutant Katherine Rumsey advanced nine places
with 8.41 (48) while Rachel Wilcock's 9.40 on the
final circuit confirmed Louise's original position. In the Under
15's Jemma Shaw came back 46th (7.58), Heather
Drillingcourt held on to 51st (8.42) and Lauren
Bradshaw came home 52nd in 8.48.
Julia Hayes acted as team manager and transport was provided by
parents and John Irwin. Congratulations to all the athletes and
their supporters.
