Welcome to St Helens Sutton Athletic Club
Northern Women’s League at Macclesfield 7 July 2002
The ladies’ team staged a superb late rally to defeat the host club, claim second spot on the day and make promotion a possibility. Numbers were the key with all events covered other than some hurdles, pole vault and lower aged distance events where Laura Brier showed great courage on her last minute 800 metres debut.
We had winners, Sue Lowrie and Michelle Murray, sprints and high jump, Natasha Brier and Lucy Mitchell in the triple jump, Michelle also offered to putt the shot. Lucy won the alongside Nichola Quinn. Caroline Morley scored a double first in the hurdles and high jump.
Gill Bacon was impressive in the middle distance events, Natalie Mullineux plugged away for points in the field events and ran in the relay which recorded the same time as the winners. Janet Holmes was third in the hammer while Louise Casey, Dianne Appleton, Chris Dempsey and Pam Appleton all stepped in to score vital points in races from 400 to 3000 metres.
There were good contributions from Layla Tapley, Anna Sheffield, Kirsty and Sarah Lewis, Laura Savage (stepping up to 800 metres for the occasion) and Vicky Johnson in the throws. Laura Brier and Stephanie Currie made debuts as javelin throwers, each finishing second.
A string of second places in the relays and forceful representation of maximisation of our officials’ points edge us clear of Macclesfield who were excellent hosts. Many thanks to our officials Pam Appleton, Phil Thomas, John Irwin, Dave Morley (team manager) and Sue Clague.
